Turkey pot roast, brought to you by the letters Jennie and O
I received a Jennie-O turkey post roast for purposes of review. All opinions here, however, are my own
So a couple of months ago, I made a toss-off comment in a Dominick's deals post about "what the heck is turkey pot roast?"
Well, now I know! Look what showed up on my doorstep this morning, courtesy of the nice folks at Jennie-O, who read my post and wanted to spread the word. 🙂
This was fortuitous, because I didn't have dinner plans for the evening yet. So, I opened one up...
And I cooked it... and I pulled out the bone per package directions...
And I shredded it...
And we ate it! Easy-peasy. You can oven cook or microwave this. I opted for the oven method -- it's pre-cooked, so only takes an hour -- and it shredded easily and made the house smell like Thanksgiving.
Yes, but how did it taste?
This is dark meat, which isn't Mr. Mashup Mom's favorite. He pronounced it: "OK, I'd eat it again." The boys pronounced it: YUMMY. I pronounced it: Pretty darn good. They have a nice recipe on the back for making turkey tortilla soup with the leftovers, which I may try if there are enough left. (Or just eat it for lunch tomorrow. Decisions, decisions.)

A little off subject but I thought I would post it before it was gone.
At Meijer, the center cut bacon is on sale for $3.50. At the Oswego store, in the meat section by the pork, there is a freezer full of them with peelies for free low salt turkey bacon when you buy the center cut. So that's two packages of bacon for $3.50 (not the pre-cooked type).
Our local market has a deli sale on the Jennie O Turkey Pot Roast for $5.99. Thanks to your comments, I think I will give it a try!

Never heard of this until the local Kroger in Columbus OH started carrying them a month or 2 ago. Delicious! I've always been a dark turkey fan and this is great. BTW for the poster who thought the photo looked like a leg, it's actually a thigh.
I really do enjoy this turkey pot roast. $7.99 at winn-dixie grocery here in St. Augustine, FL.
Plus, winn-dixie has it prepared with bone for sell also, same price.
Is this real meat? I tried some on this weekend at the recommendation of the deli staff at farm fresh and I just don't understand the texture of this turkey it taste amazing but is this real meat
Caught this on clearance, thought I'd give it a go...
Maybe the clearance was the mistake, only had one week left to go. Anyhow--looked like dog food, smelled like dog food, gave it to the dog. He loved it!
Even at the clearance price, you can find perfectly respectable rotisserie chickens for less. I can't imagine recommending this clearly industrialized 'food product' over a nice fresh whole chicken. AVOID.
Saw one at Meijer definetely did not look like that! Selling two that looked like someone already ate it. All bones no meat!
FYI the bone is a thigh bone and the meat is on the thigh and possibly drumstick meat added. It is way better than regular dark meat almost has a bit of smoky flavor but primo taste. If I could get kn sale I would buy a bunch!!!
It was last December that I posted above how happy I was that Kroger started carrying it. Now less than a year later, it looks like they've discontinued it. 🙁 🙁 🙁 Guess I'll have to find some time to look elsewhere.
