Monthly Goodwill trip: Oddities and Outfits
I try to limit my thrift store trips to once every month or two, and also try not to come home with anything like a STEREODEON! I looked this up online and it's actually a radio + turntable in the shape of a full-sized piano. Goodwill had it for $99.99, and I passed -- I see people trying to sell them for around $200 on eBay, but it looks like the past listings all ended with no sales, lol.
I am, however, trying to slowly and affordably revamp my wardrobe with thrifting finds of better fit and quality than my current work-from-home-in-yoga-pants wardrobe. The above outfit? Head-to-toe Goodwill today, and $25 for everything including the shoes. These are Gap jeans, which usually don't fit me at all -- but these are some "curvy" Gap variety which actually turned out to be super comfortable. The shirt is Jones New York, the jacket is Dress Barn, and the shoes are Life Stride.
Don't have your junior high kid take a photo of you trying on clothes with the sun behind you, lol -- but these are the same jeans paired with a $2.99 Fashion Bug shirt and $4.99 Born Mary Janes. So, how'd I do? And what treasures have you found at your local thrift store lately?

You look great with both outfits! I really love the first outfit! I've also found some neat clothes at Goodwill or our local consignment store. Practically my whole wardrobe is from those 2 stores! I have also found comfortable jeans at these stores for a fraction of the cost of buying them new! One big find I found at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago was a little black with pink and green flowers Vera Bradley purse on their regular rack (which should have been on the Boutique rack!) in excellent shape for $3.99 (I also got 20% off for senior citizens day making it $3.20)! I just love it! I also love finding books their very cheap that I have on my list! Or I can find them cheap on eBay also. Sure beats the bookstore!
Ooh yeah! I always see the vera bradley in the glass case at mine, lol.
I don't think they put Vera Bradley in our glass class...just small items. They have a separate Boutique rack for purses if they are nice enough. I once found a Wee Forest Folk collectible (which I collect) in there for under $1 which this one normally sold for around $30. I just gave them a dollar. They obviously didn't know what they had!
You look great! You look like you've lost some weight, maybe? At any rate, the cut of the floral shirt is very flattering on you.
Thank you! I have lost a whopping 7 lbs... it goes slow... but that is good to hear. 🙂
You find some good stuff at Good Will! It all looks great on you and very stylish. I don't have as much luck. Maybe I am too picky or my kids tell me different Good Will stores have better stuff...
It is SO hit or miss! Sometimes I walk out of there with nothing (last month's trip I found no clothes at all, just a pair of shoes) -- but this time for whatever reason there were a ton of possibilities.
You look cute in both outfits. I gave up on thrift shops pretty much as I never seem to find any great deals. I went again about a month ago and nada! I spend my time looking for new stuff with many discounts and I wear my stuff for a long long time. Maybe because I wear plus size and have big feet?
Don't you wonder what a stereodeon cost brand new, and who had a 1/2 a living room to put it in for the limited use?
You look great in both outfits!
Love the outfits Rachel. They flatter you and are great finds! I too have a tough time finding nice stuff at my thrift stores. My DH however has much better luck! He has found some nice stuff in them.
Good finds! Those shoes alone are worth more than the $25!!! Which Goodwills do you frequent? That stereodeon would be great for my brother.....
I find good stuff more readily at the Savers near Strartford Square. The Schmale Goodwill is no good for me, haven't bought anything there, ever! I did better at the one on North, near Menards. (I'm so bad with towns, lol)
This was the Goodwill in Lombard on Roosevelt by the Ultra Foods -- the one I went to last month was in Downers Grove on Ogden by Caputo's. The one in Lombard doesn't usually do so well for me, but I'll take it. There's also a Savers in Downers, but I haven't been there in a while
I usually have no luck at all, but I went yesterday and found a solid copper mixing bowl for $2.99! It desperately needed some love, but after a basic vinegar/salt/flour polish it's just gorgeous. I've been lusting after one for ages so I'm over the moon.
Oh nice -- that is a great price! Yesterday I had no luck with kitchen stuff at all, it was all clothes.
Not sure if anyone would be interested. Goodwill of Michiana does a "little black dress" fashion show. Last year tickets were 50. You get a lunch, get to watch the fashion show, and the ability to shop the boutique. Last year it was all the designer purses and jewerly. I was lucky enough to get a few coach bags for cheap. I think the fashion show is october 15th and it will be in Merrillville, IN. Tickets should be going on sale soon. Just thought i would share 🙂
Its a hit or miss ,garden usually and work clothes for my husband ,goes through them so fast working in the yard and fixing up my garden treasures every year ! Get tired buy more garage sale old ones ,
I agree with the comment that it depends on which store and if the earth, sun and moon line up just right... last end of summer in Lake Zurich they had 50% off all sleeveless tops. I must have bought 15 and found many name brand super cute tops that I wore this summer. Hope they do that again! Rachel love the jacket in the first pic, I am looking for a fitted jean jacket that I can layer. Looks like you had fun! 🙂
