Poke Bowls and Produce by the Pound — ALDI Stuff This Week

Let’s do a little ALDI roundup today, because what else is a cold and snowy Friday good for? (OK, it’s just flurries, but ack…) First up, the good news: Have you guys seen these Poke Bowls at your ALDI? They are amazing (if not especially cheap at $5.99 each). And yes, I bought and ate mine before reading the nutrition info — and yes, there’s more added sugar in the poke sauce than one might like, although the rest of it is great.

13g added sugar = This is a sometimes food, but definitely a better choice than the chocolate covered sea salt caramels I also saw in store this week and managed to resist, right? 😉

Your cute little Poke Bowl comes with smoked salmon, rice, sauce, and seasoning, so you just briefly heat the rice in the microwave and then mix everything up. This is a limited-time special buy, so if you’re interested in trying one, grab it sooner than later. (Do it! Soooo good!)

I highly recommend adding a little avocado and green onion to these. Note: The Poke bowls at ALDI use smoked salmon rather than raw fish, for those of you worried about buying them prepackaged.

More ALDI good news

If you  use Venmo (I never have, but I gather it’s a money exchange app that works kind of like PayPal?), they’ve partnered with ALDI to donate meals to families in need through Feeding America. Use this turkey hand emoji when sending money to friends through the Venmo app, and for every turkey hand typed, ALDI will donate ten meals to Feeding America.

And even more ALDI good news (well, OK, for me!)

My local ALDI finally finished its remodeling project and had its soft open yesterday. I don’t think anyone knew, because the store was beautiful, fully stocked, and fairly empty, but I expect it will be back to its usual crowded self in no time. Now that I’m more used to the rearranged aisles in the remodeled stores, I’m quite liking it — things are more logically organized, and I also appreciate the wider aisles.

I had also been wondering if prices tend to creep up at the remodeled stores, but I think it’s just the one I’ve been shopping at while mine’s been closed, since it’s further away from a competing Walmart. (Milk and eggs were markedly lower at my usual store yesterday than they were at my temporary store on Wednesday.)

And now the bad news (or at least, the heads up! news)

Some of the produce that has always been sold per bag at ALDI is now being sold by the pound, and they’ve added a scale in the produce section for your convenience here. I very nearly grabbed a bag of these grapes the other day, thinking that $.99 was an amazing price for a bag — and judging by the number of abandoned bags up by the cashiers, I wasn’t the only one. (Yes, $.99/lb is still a great price this week — but this is definitely something to be aware of so that you are not surprised at the register.)

Any other ALDI news this week?

Please share here for the perpetually curious.

My poke bowl was in the frozen food area so naturally eveything is frozen....do I put it in the fridge to let it thaw out?

Yup, just let it thaw in the fridge. It should be ready to eat in a day or so.

I wanna try a poke bowl, maybe plan one in for a work lunch this week. I loooove your Aldi plans, they are so useful and have really changed meal planning for the better!

Awesome! Glad they've been useful, and you'll love the Poke bowls -- SO good.

I love the newly remodeled stores but don't care for how they now display produce prices underneath in small print. It used to be easy to see what the prices were with the overhead signs. The cashier told me they've gotten a number of complaints about it.
