Labels labels labels — No HFCS… but lots of other stuff!

quaker-1

I bought these cheap Quaker chewy girl scouts granola bars at Target the other day. Note the front: NO high fructose corn syrup. OK, good, we’re all down with that.

Now, let’s look at what IS in these. Play “count the sugars,” but start with this line alone: Corn syrup, sugar, corn syrup solids, invert sugar, glycerin.

Well… I’m trying to avoid buying stuff with HFCS lately, but am pretty sure this is not actually better. I’ll read more carefully next time. 🙂 And I’m not picking on Quaker in particular — lots of brands emphasize one plus or one positive move in big print while conveniently omitting what they don’t want you to focus on. It’s good marketing, but means working harder to be an informed consumer.

What have you found hidden in your food labels lately?

Carageenan can cause cancer!!!! Its in so many 'natural' products and I don't understand why it isn't stopped. Take a look at most of the new claims on the expensive lunchmeats; the 'all natural, no preservatives, no msg, nitrites), etc, reading the label you'll find many of them with carageenan. Please, be very careful. If this upsets you, read one of the best seller books out there called The Dorito Effect by Mark Schatzker!! I've only read the first few chapters, but already throwing things out of my cupboard. All in the name of 'profit'.

I can't stand finding Stevia or sucralose in sandwich thins and other bread. I don't want to give my kids artificial sweetener, and who needs that in bread anyways!

I was recently looking for whipping cream and the only one I found without carageenan was Deans Dairy Pure! Even some different cartons of Deans had some in it, and all of the Organic brands I looked at had it!!! Wouldn't you think that at least the Organic brands would just be heavy cream?

In general it's absolutely horrifying what you find in foods that your family likes. When you start label reading your like so what the heck can I buy. MSG I have found in a lot of foods that claim no MSG yet you still find it in the ingredients.
