Welcome to the June 19, 2016 edition of Sunday Scratchups: Your weekly recipe from scratch around grocery store sales and affordable ingredients. Up today is a really fun brunch, birthday, or holiday breakfast idea: BACON ROSES.

Full disclosure: This is not my original “recipe” idea. I recently ran across How to Make a Bacon Bouquet on Pinterest, and thought it would be the perfect low-carb addition to MashupDad’s Father’s Day breakfast. This little experiment then turned out so darn cool that I wanted to share it with you guys, too. 🙂

How to Make Bacon Roses

You will need

One 12-16 oz pack of bacon
Toothpicks
Rimmed baking sheet
Tinfoil
Cross-wire (criss-cross) baking rack
One bouquet of fake flowers, preferably roses. Note: Check that the blossoms pop off easily and are not glued on.

Directions

Deadhead your fake flowers so that you are left with just the stems and leaves. (Reserve the blossoms to decorate your platter, if desired — I had sunflowers rather than roses, but they worked fine for a lying down bouquet. Roses would work better to hold the blossoms in because of the bottom leaves cupping each flower.)

Cover your baking sheet with foil for easier cleanup and place rack on top. Roll up each strip of bacon and secure with two crossways toothpicks at the fatty side.

Space bacon blossoms evenly across your rack — standing up, toothpick side down — and bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool slightly, then remove the toothpicks and slide each bacon rose blossom onto an empty flower stem to create your bacon rose bouquet.

If you have extra bacon blossoms, simply arrange them artfully around and serve!

Brunch is SERVED — with a bouquet of bacon roses

Just pop the bacon roses right back off of their artificial stems before eating them. Aren’t they cute? And you know that they’re tasty, of course, because: BACON.

How was the texture of the bacon? My kids mumble when it is soft. Was it crispy at all? Looks great!

The inside was pretty chewy, especially at the bottom -- it was cooked through and darn tasty, but honestly not what I'd call crispy. :)
