Caturday with the Notorious BKL and Friends: Lurker edition

Welcome back to Caturday with the Notorious BKL and Friends, lurker edition. All cats are lurkers, but some are more lurker than others…

It’s been a while, so of course we must publish a new installment of Caturday with the Notorious BKL and Friends: The one with the lurkers. I spy with my little eye…

A method to the (cat) madness

There’s a reason, though, that Mr. I AM DARKNESS is tucked safely on the other side of the glass door. He and Gnocchi fight nonstop — and last month he bit her, it got infected, and she ended up in the cone of shame while it healed. The vet suggested separating the two of them for a while, so: Both Gnocchi and scaredy cat Jeremy are now never in the same room with Mr. Darkness.

Can you spot him?!

We’ve tried the Feliway, we’ve tried the “calming collar,” we’ve tried the gradual introductions… Do any of you have other suggestions on how to stop territorial cats from fighting?

Nothing to see here!

With people, everything is great and friendly. With other cats, wellll….

Who’s boss

Every cat, however, acknowledges that The Notorious Bad Kitty Lucy is the alpha female in this house. She and Mr. Darkness now only engage in the token spat rather than any drawn-out tooth-and-nail fighting, and he often gives her a wide berth. (Gnocchi, unfortunately, is just aggressive enough to keep fighting — but just not tough enough to keep from losing.)

What else is BKL the boss of? Everything from the great outdoors to this pile of clothes I was about to put on,

from the entire bin of cat food…

… to the entire bathtub. It’s a good life she’s got.

How’s your Caturday going?

Other than refereeing cat fights, we’ve been busy, here! Just a glimpse into our activities for the last couple of weeks: Apple picking, an author talk & book signing, and an amazing exhibit featuring creatures inspired by Mexican folklore — including this cat-like-creation.

What have you been up to this fall, and how’s your own Caturday (or cat-free week) progressing? Let us know, and, as always, be sure to tune in next time for the latest in our ongoing Caturday adventures with the Notorious BKL and Friends.

In my 40+ years of owning cats, I have had mixed experiences with blending adult cats. Sometimes, it works immediately, Other times, a gradual approach does the trick. And, sadly, I had one occasion in which the two cats NEVER got along and had to be separated in different parts of the house.

In that case, they were older cats with strong personalities and a strong sense of their own turf. They knew the other one was there and made it their life mission to destroy each other. LOL Eventually, we separated them onto different floors, which worked for them but was a pain in the butt for us. I hope that you can find a less drastic solution.
