What have you learned from other readers lately?

I was just sitting here feeling all warm and fuzzy about the way you guys are so willing to share info, deals, tips, and more — like today, I was looking at Mandy’s comment about how she freezes fresh garden herbs: I just wash them and shake off the water a little and put them flat in a plastic bag and freeze. When I use them, I just break off a chunk the size I need, chop it while frozen or let it thaw a min. or two and use it. Some bags freeze so well that I just crush the bag a little and they crumble into chopped herbs. It works great with all my herbs. I either chop green peppers and make a flat layer in a plastic bag and break off a chunk, or cut them in quarters, freeze on a cookie sheet and put the frozen pieces in a bag to freeze. I wash my tomato’s and cut out the stem, then freeze them whole. The skin slips right off if you run them under a little cool water. I throw them in soup and chili whole, and they disintegrate into the sauce.

Well, that’s way easier (and takes up way less space) than the garden ice cubes I was making, so I’m giving it a go today. (Thanks!)

And that got me wondering: What’s the most useful tip you’ve picked up lately from another reader, whether that be a deal, a household tip, a coupon, an in-store find, a product recommendation, or ?

My husband has always soaked our corn whole for half a day. Then grilled it. The husks slide off pretty good, not quite microwave viral video clean, but still decent. The taste is amazing.

I saw the video on FB also. I did try it & it worked, tho very hot. Use oven gloves or something. Also, for a healthier version for cooking corn, just shuck the outer layers of the corn, leaving some on the corn. Wrap in tinfoil & cook on the grill. It only takes approx 15 min each side & comes out delish! It's also perfect to shuck the corn as seen on FB.

This is in an older Tyler Florence cookbook. Shuck the corn, wrap the ears in one foil package, put on a large flat pan( in case of any tear in the foil), bake at 375 for about 45 minutes (give or take depending on the size of the ears and how hot your oven cooks). Let cool and then trim off the cob. So preferable to stove top cooking since the corn stays tender. Then season and butter as desired.

I read on Hip2Save a tip on how to quickly cook corn on the cob. Cut off both ends of cob in husk. Cover in wet paper towels. Microwave for a few minutes: 1 ear - 1 1/2 minutes 2 ears - 3 to 4 minutes 3 ears - 5 to 6 minutes 4 ears - 7 to 8 minutes 6 ears - 8 to 9 minutes Let cool 5 minutes. Discard husk and eat.

I recently learned to microwave corn another way. Leave the husks on and microwave for 4 minutes per ear. Then cut off the wide end that attaches to the stalk. Grab the narrow end, this will be very, very hot so use gloves or a pot holder, and just squeeze the corn out. The corn slides right out with no silk anywhere.

I love the simplicity of this, but the whole microwaving perfectly good corn just kills me. Why destroy the health of corn on the cob by infusing it with radiation???

I was impressed with the video going around on Facebook. Cutting the end and the husk and silk slides off easily and mess free. But the radiation! Ahhhh

Thanks to someone who posted about that World Kitchen deal on Facebook for $10 off. I went to see what they had, and ended up finding something better. I've been looking for a while for new Corelle dishes, but I could not find the design I liked or in the size I liked. For example if I liked the design then the set came with those tiny bread and butter plates and not regular salad plates, or it was square design which I hate, plus I did not need any mugs. Well, on that site they have single plates for purchase and if you buy 20 you get 30% off, and if you sign up for their emails you get a code for 20% off too, free shipping after $99. So I bought 20 dinner, 20 salad, 20 bread and butter (or dessert) plates, 20 cereal bowls (I wanted a lot so I'm not constantly running out of clean dishes with my big family) and 2- 8 cups Pyrex measuring cups (about $12 each, but 30%off when you buy 2). After all 30% offs and my email 20% off (can not combine with $10 off from Facebook) plus tax, I paid about $149.00 for everything. That is a great price!!!

Then yesterday I went to check if there is anything I can get with that $10 off from Facebook, and I did get 2- 2 packs of 8x4 loaf pans. They are $5.99 each, so after discount and shipping $8 for all 4 pans, which is ok for me, since I wanted all the same size. Thanks!!
