Midweek meal planning 11/27/15

midweek-meal-planning

Welcome back to Midweek Meal Planning for the week of 11/27/15! It’s more traditional to meal plan on the weekend, but since our Chicago grocery deals mostly flip on Wednesdays and since midweek is when many of us start running out of steam, we buck the trend here. Yes, it’s Friday — but I figure Thursday was taken care of for most of us already this week. 😉

Stay tuned for this garlicky turkey noodle soup recipe on Sunday…

Midweek meal planning

  • Sunday: MashupDad grilled up some of the cheap pub burgers and pork chops from Jewel, plus potato packets & spinach salad.
  • Monday: Leftover chili.
  • Tuesday: Leftover burgers & pork chops.
  • Wednesday: Sweet Tomatoes with friends (yes, we used a coupon)…
  • Thursday: Thanksgiving! Butterflied Roast Turkey (skipped the bay leaves), garlic mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus, roasted cauliflower, Totally Inauthentic Challah.
  • Friday: Leftover Thanksgiving + turkey noodle soup.
  • Saturday: Yes, more leftover turkey and soup. Because: Thanksgiving, lol.

That's what I think. I was thinking it would roast more evenly and quickly being on the small side, but I think I will butterfly my bird next year like you did. I had forgotten about that trick! You can get a not-so-good Butterball too. I think all frozen, non-organic birds are about all created equal. My luck we got a tough ole bird this time!

Did you end up using one of those Jennie-O turkeys for Thanksgiving that were cheap at Jewel this year or some other brand? I almost price matched the Ultra 29c lb. deal this year but I was at Ultra so actually got the Norbest turkey there directly. I got a small 10 pounder this year and it was not very good. It was stringy and tough. It was edible, especially in the soup, but I will not buy a Norbest again. Anyone else have any luck with the Norbest turkey from Ultra or did I just get a bad one? (we cooked it till 165 degrees and the pop up timer did NOT pop up until it was resting out of the oven)Thanks.

I used the Jennie-O from Jewel. Last year, though, I had a Norbest from Ultra Foods and it came out fine, so maybe you just got a bum turkey? :(

Question: did you grill all that up purposely so you would have food handy during the week? How do you warm it up? Put it back on the grill or just microwave it? I kind of like the idea of having the meat already cooked so we can have dinner much quicker. I am running my kids around at the dinner hour.

Yup. We just warm it back up in the microwave and for just that reason :)

After turkey day we always make pot pie. Frozen pie crust. Left over gravy, left over turkey, some frozen veggies added to the pie crust and topped with left over mashed potatoes brushed with butter. Bake in oven and then finish up with a few minutes under the broiler.
