Update looks like Zaycon Foods, like most other folks, discontinued it after the uproar. I’ve ordered chicken from them again since, and will order ground beef again the next time they roll it around.

Original LFTB info — again, they no longer use it; this is outdated

… and yes, I am as annoyed by this as those of you who have been commenting with links to the articles, because I was originally told Zaycon Foods did not use it. So, I sincerely apologize for posting earlier that their beef did not contain this; I was going off what I was told and by seeing it on the original “does not contain” lists.

I’ve been holding off posting til they came out with an official statement, and here’s what they posted on Facebook this morning:

Sorry for the delay. We wanted to make sure we had all the information. It has come to our attention; the 93/7 ground beef that is supplied by us through National Beef has a small percentage of LFTB (Lean Finely Textured Beef). After much research and regardless of how the media portrays this product, we will continue to eat this product ourselves and will continue to offer this to our valued customers.

We suggest that you do your own research and come to your own conclusion and only purchase that which is best for you and your family. In addition to this product, we will be adding a new ground beef to our line for those of you who would like an alternative.

I’m not as annoyed that they have it — because it seems like most places do/did — as at the delay and original misleading statement. I think this whole discussion is about being able to make informed choices for ourselves and our families, so hopefully what comes out of it is increased openness so that we are able to do so.

How disappointing! I was actually thinking of buying from them the next time they are in town. :-(

I read that Target does not and have been buying 93/7 ground beef from them for a while now. I will have to look into Costco as well but I’m pretty sure that they do not as well.

Just throwing a couple of questions out there:

    1) How long does it take to pick up the phone, call your supplier and ask them if the 93/7 beef they supply to you contains LFTB?

    2) How does the supplier not know instantly the answer to that question?

    3) Why would you continue to buy meat from a supplier who can’t give you an immediate, definitive answer to the question?

    4) Why would you continue to sell this product to your customers while you await the answer?

    5) Why do you claim on your website that the beef contains: “No chemicals, additives or water added to meat during processing” when in fact it does? Ammonia is an additive the last time I checked.

    6) If and when there is ever a recall on your products, how will we be notified and HOW LONG will that take?? Or will you be sorry for the delay and be waiting more information while we suffer the consequences?

    7) Did you ever consider that we did our own research before we bought from you and BELIEVED you when you stated on your website that there was no added chemicals, additives or water added during processing, but yet you delivered other than what was stated? Sounds like the definition of fraud to me.

    8) Why are you altering your earlier face book responses if you have “nothing to hide?”

I have another question on their chicken! Is it organic? grain fed? caged? Not really sure on this either now.

      • rachel says:

It’s certainly not organic at that price :) . They say: “the suppliers we use do not individually cage the chickens. They are in a barn-like structure (to keep them from the elements) but free to roam and to go outside when they want. They are fed a diet of corn and soy (both made in the USA). I hope this helps.”

      • Coupon Cutie says:

Oh, just check their website under FAQ, but remember just don’t believe everything you read. UGH!

        • SoapboxTray says:

I don’t eat beef, but I just had my first purchase of chicken from Zaycon and it is such a great quality, large and very tender. I am very very happy with their chicken.

          • Wendi says:

I am new and not sure if I did this correctly but I want to respond to the people talking about the chicken. I also bought from them thinking man what a great deal! When I got my chicken breasts I could not believe how large they are. There is no way they are selling chicken breasts this large and the chickens have not been pumped full of hormones. If you have not seen you should watch food matters. I thought of that when we saw the size of the breasts we bought. They have also lost my trust and money.

            • Heather says:

There are different varieties of chickens. Just like breeding certain breeds of dogs to make them smaller ie. mini dobermans, mini greyhounds, and mixing certain breeds like pugs and beagles to create “puggles”, chickens have been bred to have larger breasts and thighs because they are the most desireable parts people want to buy and eat. Some of the largest breasts I have purchased have come from a local organic farm.

not to mention, annoyed that we now have 40lbs of “unsure” beef to go through before we can change our minds. I guess we could throw it all out and buy the good stuff, but no one in their right minds will do that! We are stuck for buying in bulk!

  4. Su says:

What we all also need to remember is the following:

    Breath! Calm down and Breath!
We have all VERY LIKELY been eating this stuff all along. Now, am I happy about that? No, but it hasn’t killed me yet, and I do still eat the occassional NY Hot Dog Cart Hot Dog and the reality of those things is scary bad, but I figure that’s adding to the flavor, right? :D Honestly, I grew up in the NY Public School System, so I’m VERY sure that I grew up eating this stuff.

So, maybe this explains why I’m as short as I am, but the reality is that it hasn’t killed me, going forwrad I now have the ability to make an informed choice and I shall.

For those of you thinking of pitching what you already purchased from Zaycon, you might want to investigate a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. They may be willing to take it from you and then you can write it off as a donation. :D

  5. Nancy says:

Glad I stuck with the chicken-but really, how long have we all been eating it and not knowing? Yuck!

  6. I went to their FB page and that post has since been taken down. What the heck? Well, I just put in my order this morning and hope they will give me a refund since I was going off of information I had read last week. Sheesh.

  7. yvette says:

“We bring products direct from the farm / processor (or as nearly as direct as possible). The products are as fresh as if you had your own farm, but without all the chores” – I think they should change that statement!

  8. mariposa says:

Does anyone know if pink slime shrinks when cooked? Just curious…

  9. Les says:

This site like all the other blog sites get a COMMSISSION for sending you to Zaycon.

  10. DIANA SMTIH says:

UTAH, we are bringing you our Fresh 93/7 Ground Beef – LFTB FREE! You will be able to log on and order next Wed. March 28th @ 5pm. Watch for our email!
THIS WAS POSTED ON ZAYCON FB TODAY

How can we sit here and say well maybe it is not that bad if McDonald’s doesn’t even sell it? You are right it probably has been put in our food for years and during those years we have seen an increase in just about every disability there is and not to mention obesity. Ever think about when the government started taking the nutrients out of our food and adding things like “pink slime”, ammonia, and bleaching our food this is also when we saw ADD, ADHD, Autism, etc numbers go through the roof.

  12. Jeanne says:

This makes me livid! I driving way out of my way buying this prodcut to specifically to avoid having these things sneakily put into my food! I will not even be purchasing thier chicken from them anymore bc I am so disappointed that they find it okay to put this into thier beef. What a let down!

    • susie says:

If you have a restaurant depot near you or know someone who has their membership card, they have boneless skinless Halal chicken breast for $1.52/lb. I just bought a case a few weeks ago, it has 40lbs in, but very tender and moist. It doesn’t have that strong poultry smell either.

  13. Tim says:

The whole pink slime issue was propagated by ABC news who is being sued to the tune of 1.2 billion dollars for their lies. They put a lot of people out of work due to their own personal agenda and got a lot of people upset over non truths.
