I had no desire to shop again, but realized my $5.00 Catalina from buying tuna at Jewel 2 weeks ago expired today, so had to go. You just can’t throw away $5.00. :) Luckily I was driving by both Jewel and CVS on the way to other errands today, so…

At Jewel:

Clearance white crabmeat, $1.33.
Clearance lump crabmeat, $1.99.
Bird’s Eye Steamfresh brown rice, $1.00. Used $1.00/1 printable (no longer available).
1/2 lb-ish Di Lusso roast beef, $4.89. Used $1.00/1 in the 1/13 SS.
1/2 lb-ish Di Lusso mesquite turkey, $4.15. Interestingly, $4.29 came off for the BOGO 1/2 lb promo. Used $1.00/1 in the 1/13 SS.

Paid with the $5.00 Catalina and $1.07. Net cost: $6.07.

At CVS:

Dean’s milk, $2.49. Used $1.00/1 from the Jewel grand re-opening booklet they gave out in store a long time ago (expires today, if you have any left!).

Paid $1.53.

So … Net $7.60, out of pocket $2.60. I’d also found applesauce cups on the clearance shelf at Jewel, but no shelf tags, and the barcode was crossed out, so they wouldn’t scan for a price. Finally found someone to ask and she refused to sell them to me, saying that they don’t cross out barcodes and she would send them back for credit instead. Very un-Jewel-like, huh. Guess the kids can eat crab meat out of the can instead… ;)

Now for the expired part

The South Elmhurst Jewel had a nice clearance shelf today… but ew. No one wants a big tub of Shopper’s Value shortening that expired September 2012 — can you say: rancid?

I also found Nestle white chocolate baking bars for $1.07, which seemed great until you flipped them over.

Anyway, a couple other non-expired items of note:

La Preferida cheese sauce for $.72.

Maxwell House international chai latte, $1.15. If you like this and are in the area: 62946 here gets you $1.00/2 Maxwell House International.

Slim-fast bars, $2.74. There’s $1.00/1 in the 1/6 RP and 1/27 RP.

And on the clementines

Some of you were asking how much clementines are at Jewel. They had the 5-lb boxes for $5.99, so $4.99 after the $1.00/1 store printable here.

I wouldn’t want to throw away a $5.00 catalina, either. lol
But wouldn’t Ultra accept it up to 30 days expired? :-)

  2. rachel says:

Don’t get me started on trying to get Ultra to accept an OYNO catalina. It’s in their policy that they do, but every time I’ve tried at my location it’s involved an extended argument and a call or email to corporate. I’m too tired to tilt at that particular windmill this week :)

    • feelgood says:

I hear ya. Accepting expired manufacturers coupons, or manufacturers coupons with another store’s name on them, can be a real challenge at Ultra. The last time they refused a Jewel OYNO, I myself called corporate, got an apology from them and the store manager, and a $50 gift card!

      • rachel says:

You got a gift card?! I just got an email, lol.

It helps to cause a stink. I got a $10 GC from one of the Bolingbrook Meijers when I was embarrassed in front of the entire store when I walked myself and my grocery cart over to customer service, discussing the whole competitor’s store coupon thing. Gladly for me, my embarrassment was very short lived. :)

          • Charlotte says:

And should be noted that that store is now AWESOME when it comes to having it’s cashiers knowing about accepting competitor’s store coupons together with manufacturer’s coupons.

I just used 3 OYNO catalina’s at Lombard Ultra, Manager happened to be by the register while the cashier was taking my coupons and they took them just fine :)

Didn’t realize steamfresh made brown rice – would love to know how that tastes!

The Jewel sales tags are really confusing. The price on the La Preferida cheese sauce is actually $1.46 with a savings of .72 cents off the original price of $2.18. Same for the Maxwell house, sale price is $2.31 savings of $1.15 off the original price of $3.46.

I only know this because one day they had EE cookies really cheap (or so I thought) according to the same tags. However, when I rang them up they were a higher price, went to customer service and they “explained” the tags to me. Happy to know I’m not the only one who thinks the tags reads the other way around.

I buy clearance items from Jewel with crossed out barcodes all the time!

  6. Goddess says:

Why didn’t you just apply the $5 to an older receipt? That way you could have gone back in any time within 60 days of that receipt and they would have accepted the cat since it’s a mfr coupon. I do this all the time. Save your receipts and eventually a coupon will appear!

  7. rachel says:

Cause I wanted the Di Lusso anyway, so might as well spend it? :)

  8. Kristy says:

Just plain chocolate or white chocolate (with no nuts?) Yeah, I’d buy that. The “expiration” date doesn’t mean it turns to spider eggs on the next day. It’s just a best quality date. The biggest danger with old chocolate is that the fat might turn rancid, but if it’s stored properly (cool dry location) it’s fine for years!

    • rachel says:

Just plain white chocolate. If it had been on my shelf and I went to use it, yeah. But as I had no immediate plans to use it, I didn’t want to buy it already several months past the best by date and then have it sit on my own shelf for months :) . I was more worried about the expired shortening, actually! lol
