Walmart Black Friday news — layaway, price matching and more!

And updates and answers to some questions at I Heart The Mart here.

Some crazy Walmart Black Friday 2012 updates for you guys today! You’ll want to read the whole scoop over at I Heart The Mart, but here are some highlights:

  1. If you put items on layaway now, you can purchase on Black Friday at Black Friday prices (!). You cannot purchase now at the BF price, but you can put it on layaway now then come back on Black Friday to purchase at the price in effect then. You must pay for the item in full on Black Friday to get that price; you can’t leave it on lawayay. So, anything you see in the Walmart BF ad, you can basically “reserve” for yourself now by putting it on layaway, as long as you can find it in stock in the store.
  2. You can price match layaway items as long as they are identical to the item in a competitor’s ad.
  3. Walmart is having an online two-day Black Friday event starting early Thanksgiving and going through Friday. Some examples of items can be found in the I Heart The Mart post.
  4. They will price match competitor ads on Black Friday, as long as items are identical and you are purchasing within the dates and times outlined in the competitor ad.

Update — notes from their FB page:

This for instance: “This is the information we have: If you have any items in Layaway and would like to receive the reduced price during our Black Friday sale, the item(s) would need to be deleted from the Layaway account and added back to receive the event price (or price matched, whichever is lower). Keep in mind Layaway will be closed until 9am on Friday (11/23). Event prices for items sold during our first two sales events at 8pm 11/22 and 10pm 11/22 are only available while supplies last so they may be sold out when the Layaway desk reopens. We hope that helps.”

this sound great but will layaway be open at that time, and if we have to go the next day will they still match the price for the 8:00, and 10:00 prices?

Update — OK, from their FB page: “This is the information we have: If you have any items in Layaway and would like to receive the reduced price during our Black Friday sale, the item(s) would need to be deleted from the Layaway account and added back to receive the event price (or price matched, whichever is lower). So: Layaway is closed Thursday and does not open til 9AM Friday, which may be a problem for some earlybird stuff. I added the FB page comment and link to the above post if you want to join the discussion there.

They will only match the price at the time. And I don’t know what time layaway opens or if it is the same at all stores — you might call your local store and ask for layaway hours that Th and Fri.

How about items with gift card? What if the competitor has the same sale price but a better gift card that comes with the purchase?

  4. Beth says

Ok, so on the same token, I just bought an item that will be part of the black friday deals. If I bring that item in with the receipt on Thursday night, go straight to CS, will they adjust the price? It would be the same as having that item on layaway, it’s not new black friday designated shipment either. right?

I did, I’ll let you know when they respond. I am also reading the thread related to layaway, and they are being very vague about answering a simple question. The verbiage states that the Black Friday price will be effective while the supply lasts, and that the layaway desk will open Friday morning. Alot of people are asking if the item sells out on the shelf the night before when layaway is not open, but they have it in layaway, would that be considered “in stock” once the layaway is cancelled as it states needs to be done to get the black friday price. None of the responses are directly answering this question. Wonder how all of this will play out ….. For me, not sure I want to be around when the riot begins ….

LOL you wouldn’t catch me anywhere NEAR Walmart on Black Friday, but… yeah, it sounds like it might be a mess. Passing along the info because it could make for great deals, though.

i just called walmart and she said they have different upc’s for black friday items even tho they are the same daily things they have..not sure i understand that. but she said they wont price match things in layaway now if its cheaper black friday

I know people like deals, but honestly for your own safety you should stay away from Walmart on Thursday night and Black Friday early morning deals. I went last year and it was absolutely nuts. People can be rude, obnoxious and sometimes even violent at the Walmart Black Friday events. These people are ready to kill over a waffle makers. I don’t think anyone’s safety is worth risking for an item made in China. I should also add that a lot of the same stuff in the store is also available online.

I just spoke with walmart and they said they are NOT doing this. The only way they would agree to it was if I could find that somewhere on walmart.com and take it in and show it to them. The reason being, for example, if they had a samsung tv for 248 on black friday, those tvs are not currently in the store. They will be shipped and held until just before the sale, then they will hand out tickets for the tvs, and you can’t have them until the tvs are put out. If you have PROOF from walmart that they are doing this, and wanted to post a link to that part of their website, that would be awesome. They called that a “Pre-Sale” and that that would defeat the purpose of black friday. Hope that helps.

I just typed out a whole long response to this, and it did not post so I am keeping this much shorter. Unless you can find that somewhere written, you CANNOT do this. I just spoke with an assistant manager and a general manager at store #100 in Bentonville (The Walmart Home Office Walmart) and they said no.
