Simple easy, super easy, so easy baked apple chips

applechips

No, really: These two ingredient apple chips are easy, guys! Let’s reprise an old favorite in a Frugal Homemade recipe today, since ALDI has honeycrisp apples on sale this week (2 lbs for $1.69, yum). When apples are in season, making your own chips can be more affordable than buying the bags — not to mention tastier, fresher, and with no added sugar or corn syrup.

Simple Baked Apple Chips

apple-chips-on-sheet

Ingredients

Honeycrisp apples (I used 2.5 apples here, which filled one large sheet)
Cinnamon

Directions

Slice your apples as thinly as you can. Don’t bother to core them, but do remove seeds and stems from the slices. Arrange in a single layer on a cookie sheet, using parchment paper or a silicon mat. Sprinkle your apple slices generously with cinnamon and bake at 225 degrees for 2-3 hours, turning sheet around halfway through cooking time. Test for doneness around the 2.5 hour mark, and when apple slices are lightly browned and crisp and the edges are curling up, turn off the heat and leave them in the oven another half hour to an hour or so to finish drying out. Remove from cookie sheet and enjoy!

Store any leftover apple chips in a tightly sealed container and use within a couple of days.

Perfect recipe for a crisp fall day

Try this easy apple chips recipe, and your house will smell like apple pie for hours. Mine, alas, are gone already… You can’t get much simpler than just two ingredients, and the only thing you have to watch out for here is overcooking these. Burnt apple chips are a sad, sad thing, so if you’re using a mandoline and slicing more thinly than a knife can, check yours closer to 2 hours. 🙂 Apple chips are also a great allergy-friendly snack, and naturally gluten and dairy free.

The first batch didn't make it through the afternoon...and I'm home alone! I used a Mandolin to slice up the apples very thin and the chips were a little too dark after 2 hours of baking. (Not that it stopped me from eating the whole batch!) I just sliced up a second batch using a slightly thicker cut and they're in the oven now and I'm keeping my eye on the timer. These are perfect when you need something sweet and crunchy. Thanks Rachel for another great recipe!

LOL! Mine never make it to the leftovers stage either, but I figure it's way healthier than eating chips ;). You probably sliced them thinner with a mandoline than I could with a knife -- mine almost always take the whole three hours. Glad you enjoyed them.

Honeycrisp are sweet! Try the ALDI ones -- I got some last week and another bag today, and they've been good.

Do the kids enjoy them? I always end up doing a Apple dump cake so Apple chips would be fun to change things up a bit.

They do! Junior High Guy didn't eat any of this batch though because he keeps breaking wires on his braces and is trying not to eat crunchy things, :-/. Use a sweet apple like honeycrisp, though.
