Do you have a bunch of this stuff from this summer’s Walgreens deals? Both Erin and JulieP sent this in — Banana Boat is voluntarily recalling a number of continuous spray sunscreens because… several people have caught on fire.
- Here is the entire UPC list of recalled products and press release.
- From the above press release: “Consumers who have purchased any of the above listed products are advised not to use them. Consumers with questions or complaints regarding this market withdrawal can contact Energizer by calling Consumer Affairs at 1-800-SAFESUN (1-800-723-3786) Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 7:00PM Eastern, or by sending an email to: SUNCARE@customerfollowup.info.”
- CBS News article.
From the CBS article above:
Energizer Holdings (ENR) is pulling nearly two dozen formulations of UltraMist off store shelves due to the risk that the lotion can ignite when exposed to open flame.
A company spokesman said there have been five reports of people catching on fire after applying the sunscreen in the last year. Four cases were reported in the U.S. and one in Canada. More than 20 million units have been sold since UltraMist launched in 2010.
Energizer is advising consumers not to use 23 products in its “continuous spray Banana Boat sun care” line. It is also asking retailers to stop selling the products.
No word yet on whether they’ll refund consumers. Now, I have to go check my UPCs.

Isn’t it common sense not to spray and aerosol oil near an open flame?
This is true. I read some of the incidents though — like one guy put on sunscreen inside, then went outside to BBQ and apparently it wasn’t dry yet and… that’s not something people would necessarily think of, it taking a long time to dry like that.
