Dominick’s
- Lynn noticed: “Butterball Precooked Turkey Bacon (15 slices, but a very light package) is on sale at Dominicks for $1 (normally $3.99 at my store). There are q’s out there for $1/2 or $.55, so a good thing to get with your free grapefruit juice!”
Kids’ clothing
- A warning from Charlotte: “Please note that Disney clothing runs SMALL. Very small. And girl’s clothing runs smaller than boys in general. To give you an idea of the size difference: The yellow shirt is a girl’s Disney Shirt, the green is a girl’s Falls Creek shirt from Meijer and the blue one is a boy’s Jumping beans shirt from Kohls. All are size 2T.”
- Samantha agrees: “Yes, I second that disney store stuff runs VERY small! I bought my daughter the minnie mouse costume (in pink on sale and super cute!) in a 5T but I would say it was more of a 3T or small 4T . . .one time I had to return all the bathing suits I bought both my kids because they were a good 2 or 3 sizes too small and i had ordered big!”
- A jeans tip from Susan C.: “When my kids were small I would iron on a patch on the knee INSIDE of the jeans before they wore them.”
Meijer
- Scott on the free Ocean Spray grapefruit juice: “I picked this up at Meijer this morning. They were also on sale 2/$4.00 making them free after the $2 coupon” Try ZIP 18051 or 33990 for the coupon.
- Debbie got hers there too: “I picked it up at the Champaign Meijer last Friday for the same price also!”

- Some good news from Adina: “Old Navy started their clearance. It looks like they are redoing the entire store so lots of markdowns.”
Reader requests
- Jen on Facebook asks: “Anyone else have trouble with swiping their Jewel card in the card reader at Shell stations? Any tricks?”
- Charlotte wonders: “Do you or your readers have any “inexpensive” alternatives to school photos? We just had the first ones taken of our son last year, and they wanted $85 for 6 photos! I’m figuring this year, we’ll do something else…”

To the reader that wanted an alternative to school pics. I go to Portrait innoventions an they usually have a package of a whole bunch for like $14.99..however beware that they will try to get you to spend way more! I usually get the smallest packge. But $65 sounds really high. Ours is usually $35 for an 8×10, a 5×7, 4 2×4(I think that is it), and 8 wallets. Have you asked the school about finding other options?
For photos… i would ask around to see if anyone you know is an amateur photographer. My cousin got herself a Canon SLR camera and has been reading and taking classes to learn how to use her camera. She has used friends and family as subjects and they have come out pretty good and people are using them as family portraits. Personally I hate traditional school pics since they are so staged.
The company used by our school offers a photo CD as an option for only $20. It’s kind of hard to see it on the order form and I swear they try to hide it. It has the one or two school pics and a full release so I can have the pictures printed anywhere. I think its listed as my photo adventure CD on our forms.
I’ve been very happy with portrait innovations or target for photos. target had messed up something with my order, so they shipped me a whole bunch of the photos that I wasn’t even going to order for free-great customer service.
Meijers will take the Wags RR’s
They are not supposed to, per their policy.
Does Meijer take all Walgreens RR? Do you know if it falls under taking competitors store coupons like targets?
For pictures- I have used JCPenney for about 12 years now . I buy their membership for 2 years and photos are about $4 each and there are always some promotions going on too. From school I only buy the basic set for $8 that includes a few pictures and a class photo.
@ Jen on Facebook- my jewel card has NEVER scanned at shell. I always have to enter the number on the keypad. Don’t forget to press enter afterwards.
RE: Jewel card at Shell. I tried this for the first time the other day. When I put the Jewel card in, it didn’t work–I think it thought it was a credit card since it asked for my zip and then said UNAUTHORIZED. Then, I noticed that there was a button labeled JEWEL CARD that you had to press first (it was on the LED screen). When I pressed that first, it worked. HTH.
I carry just the key ring tag and wonder what the procedure is to use that? did someone say you can enter the card number? ty
Our school portraits are usually done by Lifetouch. On the brochure, they list BIG $$ packages in bold large print. And in microscopic print are the less costly packages. There is an option for about $10-14 that includes a bunch of wallets and 2 5×7. And if I want a different size, I can add another sheet for $10. Per kid I spend about $21. And mainly because I want them to have a class photo which is always included in the cost.
For photos: I have 3 kids in school and I never get school pictures. It’s just too expensive! I go to the portrait studios inside Walmart. Usually they have specials that run about $7.99 and you get a great amount of pics. I’ve been very happy with them and the quality is great!
just left target the starkist Tina pouches are on tp for 1.04. 2.6 oz
I also quit buying school photos for my kids (although I’m sorry they don’t get the class photos). We have to pre-pay, and my husband actually got *angry* about how bad the photos were last year!
I go to Target about 2x/year for photos. They always have coupons for big portrait packages for $7.99 (no sitting fee, (2) 8×10, (2) 5×7, (4) 3 1/2 x5, 16 wallets: all from same pose) or $3.99 for individual sheets (1 sheet= (1) 8×10, (2) 5×7, etc.). They give you a 10 minute session (no clothing changes), which can include shots of kids in a group + individual shots. You pick up the pics about 10 days later.
I have to say, I’ve gotten some really good pictures from Target. They’re posed shots with backdrop, of course, and not the artsy, mod black & whites that are in vogue, but I’m okay with that! And at that price, I can go as often as I want and everyone in the family can have a picture.
Re: School portraits: Their is an upcharge on those packages offered thru the school because the school gets a percentage. FYI
Re: Shell/Jewel card: My card does not swipe. I go inside and tell them I want to fill up and will pay inside after and they scan the card inside when I’m done. (Lake Villa ) I will try the pin pad method next time tho, thanks for the tip.
I also skip the school portraits. We have a neighbor who is an amateur photographer and very talented, so we traded some wine for pics
. Our school also has a parent who is a pro photographer and volunteers his time every year for auction photos. They are 100 times better than school pics, and cost less. We sell pics of kids plus sibs at the auction and they are my favorite photos every year.
I skip the school photos as well. We buy the yearbook (elementary and middle school kids) so we at least get to see the staged photo. My friends sister is a professional photographer and comes to Chicago area once or twice a year and typically will do the shoot at Willow Creek Church in South Barrington outside on their grounds. $50 for a half an hour of as many photos/people as she gets in that time. I then can choose 5 photos from the one she has taken for the $50 and can choose more for $10 (these prices were from this fall). Feel free to email me I can send you a sample of my kiddos. She is awesome. Then I send to Costco or print on my color proofer at the office
I went to the Old Navy in Oak Park today and they did have clearance out, but no additional markdowns off of the clearance price yet.
For school pictures this year, I bought the digital download package for $20. I then sent it to Walgreens and Target when they offered free prints.
Thanks Lynn for the heads up at Dominick’s on the Turkey Bacon! Got 3 of them today.
