A Madison Reed Hair Color Review — Spoiler Alert: Loved It!

This post has been sponsored by Madison Reed. I received hair color for the purpose of review; however, all opinions in this post are my own.

I found my first gray hair at the age of 16, so for the purposes of this Madison Reed review we’ll pretend I’m now hovering around 30 — despite the plethora of gray hairs you can see in the “before” photo below. 😉 (While we’re pretending, we’ll also pretend that I intentionally let my hair go this long in order to do a thorough review… rather than just waiting too long to order new hair color!)

before-part

I started coloring my hair in my late 20s and have bounced between various drugstore brands ever since, finally settling in on a dark reddish brown shade. As I’ve gotten older, however (alas, well past 30…) the stubborn grays have been harder to cover and the color fades faster. Plus, every time I color my hair I have had to put up with color that’s initially too dark and monotone until some of it washes out over the next few days, as well as a few days of extra dry and extra poofy hair.

So I was pretty excited to try out Madison Reed hair color, which promises Selfie Worthy Hair Color at Home! Well, here’s a windy-day “after” selfie to help you judge that for yourself, and you can see I got some very nice gray coverage here.

Picking your new hair color

perfect-shade

It’s always a little nerve-wracking trying to choose a new brand and shade of hair color, but the Madison Reed site walks you through the process of choosing your perfect shade with a series of questions covering everything from your hair type to your current hair color.

hair-type

After you go through all the questions, the site recommends the best hair color for you — and also provides several similar alternatives to choose from in case the initial suggestion doesn’t look quite right.

Madison Reed color matched me to Milano Brown, which is a deep brown with warm auburn undertones, then recommended several other options. Milano Brown looked pretty good to me, though, so I went with that match and sat back to await my first hair color shipment.

Now what’s especially useful here for procrastinators like me is that you can choose either one time delivery or to have your preferred color delivered at regular intervals of your choice (anywhere from every two weeks to every eight weeks). You also get a subscription discount, so if you turn out to love the product as much as I now do, that’s really the way to go.

So, how’d it turn out?

Milano Brown turned out to be a warm dark brown in the shade, as seen above in my before-and-after selfies…

But it turned out to be just a gorgeous red in the sun!

I really love the way my hair changes color when the light hits it, as well as the depth and richness of the color. These photos were taken the day after I colored, so you can see it’s not overly dark and has some nice variations in tone.

But wait, there’s more

If you need some extra help choosing a color or with the hair coloring process itself, you can call, email, or chat with the Madison Reed Color Crew. You can even send in a photo of your hair to get personalized advice!

And everything in the hair color kit I received showed the same level of cheerful thoughtfulness. Madison Reed hair color is made in Italy and is free of ammonia, parabens, and other smelly and not so fantastic ingredients, instead featuring keratin, ginseng, and argan oil. It smelled better than any hair color I’ve ever used over the past… too many… years, and left my hair super soft and shiny.

Your kit comes with everything you need to color your hair at home. In addition to the color itself, you get a super stylish cap (such as the one I’m sporting above) to help reduce mess and process the color, plus two pairs of gloves, a packet of barrier cream for your hairline, a just-in-case cleansing wipe, and little sample size bottles of color enhancing shampoo and conditioner.

Want to try out Madison Reed hair color for yourself?

You can have your very own Madison Reed hair color kit in your hot little hands within about 4-6 business days. Madison Reed also has a 100% satisfaction “love guarantee,” and promises to make it right or provide a full refund within 30 days of  your purchase date if you’re not completely satisfied with the product. I was really surprised with the quality of this product at such a reasonable price, and hope you love Madison Reed hair color as much as I do!

It looks great! Keep us posted as I am curious how long it will last. Nice N"easy says 14 washing or something like that but it doesn't last more than 6 in my world but then I don't have to wash more than once a week. Also How long will the referral code be good for? thank you!

As of today it's actually been about three weeks since I colored mine (I did it before we left on a trip to Florida, so didn't have time to write the post right away). It's faded a little, but not as much as you might expect given that it's an ammonia free formula -- and I'm happy with the way it's holding up. The grays are still covered ... except of course for that pesky new growth at the part starting to peek through ;). I shampoo mine every couple of days, so that's quite a few washings + the chlorine from the pool on our trip.

It looks great. Just curious if with the deals you can encounter for store dye, would you shell out the $20 for a subscription? Is it that superior to the quality you can get for less? Thanks!

Thanks! I liked it much better than the store dye that I've been using (that's how this ended up being such a long review, lol) and am planning to start a subscription for myself. It is more expensive than the store-bought boxes (especially after coupons) but cheaper than a salon, and seems like a reasonable additional charge for the better quality.

They do sometimes release coupon codes, too -- I don't see a current one but will definitely post the next time they have one available. If you order using a referral link: https://refer.madison-reed.com/s/272gv (mine) you'll get $15 off your first order, if you want to give it a try and gauge whether it's worth it to you.
