Apple juice has wings… fruit bars are light sabers!
Here’s a great new giveaway for you guys, sponsored by ALDI! I’ve already told you a bit about the SimplyNature natural and organic products that are out in stores right now, and recently had the opportunity to check out some SimplyNature and Fit & Active products (which are lower in fat, calories, sodium, and sugar than their regular brands). See below for a review and your opportunity to win a gift certificate to check out these brands for yourself!
You can get a lot of this for $25
They sent over a $25 gift certificate so I could pick up some of the SimplyNature and Fit & Active brands and tell you about them — I spent a total of $34.22, but that’s because I also bought produce! Here are the SimplyNature and Fit & Active products I purchased:
Fit & Active organic soy milk, $2.49. (I also bought Friendly Farms vanilla almond milk for $2.49, even though it wasn’t one of these “better for you” brands — Mr. 10 had some with breakfast and pronounced it great.)
SimplyNature organic frozen 12 oz strawberries, $2.39.
SimplyNature organic frozen strawberry fruit bars (four pack), $2.69.
Fit & Active microwave popcorn, $1.69.
Fit & Active light string cheese, $2.49.
SimplyNature organic raw milk sharp cheddar, $3.49.
Fit & Active liquid water enhancer, $2.69.
SimplyNature brown rice crisps, garden salsa flavor, $2.29.
3-pack Simply Nature organic apple juice boxes, $1.69.
SimplyNature organic vanilla lowfat yogurt, $2.99.
The report and the review
We have now tried a lot of these products, with mixed reviews — like anything else, you have to try it to see what works for your family’s tastes.
What we liked
You can see above that apple juice boxes and fruit bars are a huge hit with Mr. 5, and the strawberry fruit bars contain: filtered water, organic strawberries, organic strawberry puree, organic sugar, citric acid, guar gum, and xanthan gum. (They do warn they are packed on the same equipment as products that have milk and tree nuts, for those of you with allergies.) The non-dairy “milk” alternatives, also good, and I’ll add them to the rotation when we can’t find a better sale with coupons on national brands — they were very, very comparable.
The string cheese… was string cheese! You can’t go wrong with that.
More interesting, though, was the USDA organic raw milk sharp cheddar bar. This was actually sharp, and had a nice texture — I’d put it out on a cheese tray or mix it into a nice grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough.
The brown rice crisps (gluten free and vegan!) are a new favorite of Mr. 10, and have a good, mildly spicy flavor and satisfying texture. These do contain corn, for those of you avoiding that, but have no preservatives, no artificial flavors or colors, zero grams trans fat, zero mg cholesterol, no added MSG.
I know some of you were wondering about the organic yogurt. (OK, I mixed blueberries in mine…) This was a little thicker than some of the organic brands I’ve tried — some I don’t like because they’re just too “runny.” Since a couple people asked earlier about the ingredients, SimplyNature organic vanilla lowfat yogurt contains: Cultured pasteurized organic grade A low fat milk, organic dried cane syrup, water, organic corn starch, organic inulin, organic natural flavor, organic rice starch, organic locust bean gum, pectin, citric acid.
What didn’t go over as well
I wouldn’t buy the Fit & Active popcorn again. It tasted, for lack of a better word, kind of stale — Mr. 5 only ate a few bites out of the above bowl, I ate a few bites, and we ended up tossing the rest of the bag. And we’re popcorn lovers over here…
The Fit & Active water enhancer also wasn’t a hit. I’m not a fan in general, but the kids LOVE the name brand stuff. Neither of them really cared for this, and didn’t finish their cups. They said it wasn’t sweet, and tasted “weird.” (Sorry, I can’t give you an opinion since fruit punch is not something I drink…)
