UPDATE — this is a no go. See statement from corporate here that BRU is not a “competitor.”

Update from Christy: “The last time a coupon like this was included in the Toys R Us ad, my local Meijer stopped accepting the coupon because it was not for a specific brand. YMMV on this one!”

Meijer’s policy is to accept competitor store coupons — so check out this deal Ashley’s mom found, and Ashley shared! Thanks, Ashley!

purexah

150 oz Purex or 128-150 oz Arm & Hammer is $6.99 at Meijer this week. (This is in the Sunday ad for Chicagoland — running through 3/13.)

8offdet

Today’s Toys R Us ad has an $8.00 store coupon off laundry detergent 128 oz+. Print online on page six of their weekly ad here. Put those together and you have: Free laundry detergent! They’ll probably adjust the coupon down because their policy does not allow for overage, but free is good. :)

The last time a coupon like this was included in the Toys R Us ad, my local Meijer stopped accepting the coupon because it was not for a specific brand. YMMV on this one!

  2. rosa says:

where can i find the coupon policy

  3. Kari O. says:

The McHenry Meijer won’t accept this either because of the reason Christy said.

  4. Liz S. says:

Does anyone knows if the Bolingbrook Meijer is accepting this coupon?

    • Kelley says:

Just got back from there and they would not take it. They said they were told not to accept it because it isn’t for a specific item. I am still apprehensive though. Isn’t it within the coupon policy regulations?

      • Deb says:

I also tried to use this at the Bolingbrook Meijer. My explanation was a little different. I was told since the coupon didn’t say MANUFACTURER COUPON on it, that it was why they wouldn’t accept it. That seems crazy to me because if it is a Mfg coupon then how is it a competitor coupon?

        • Kelley says:

That is a strange one. I felt like they were talking in circles because they tried to show me on the coupon policy that competitor coupons were only taken on general merchandise until I pointed out the fact that it also said grocery. They then back tracked and said it had to be a specific item. Now I’m just as confused as they are!

  5. Jolne says:

Has anyone tried to use competitor’s coupons at the oswego or Plainfield meijer?

    • DON OCONNELL says:

I have used many many comp coupons in Plainfield store – hth

      • Pam says:

Don, what competitor are you using, and have you ever had a problem?
Like I said in my other comment here, one time I got a cashier who told me that I could only use a competitor, which I was using Target, or a manufacturer, but not both. And she had the weirdest rationale for it, that didn’t even make sense; I can’t remember what it was now though.

        • DON OCONNELL says:

One time in the last 100 I had the coupon beep in a stack Target/manu , cashier denied it and I made my stop at the c/s which I always do – they know me very well by now, I was told that they turn the competitor coupons into the manu and if they send both from said stack it would be double couponing – this is absurd as they do not remit comp coupons into the manu for remittance….. in cases like this I will be doing this there tomorrow and seeing what happens…. I lose some and win some there but letting them win once in a while and knowing me has paid dividends …. I recently had them give me a $10 Meijers gc because my manu coupons were expiring and they still didnt have the product I had a rain check for….. I just work with them and stay calm and cool with them.

          • Lisa says:

Smart approach (calm, cool)as you are likely to return and why have it be under adverse conditions?

          • DON OCONNELL says:

Today I was told they talked to corporate and were specifically told not to do this deal, no reason given and I decided to let them win this battle this time. I was also told they are not allowing multiple transactions in non self check out and this was a result of the Bounty/Meijer paper towel deals last week. Again I let that go…. I will win next battle and war and plan on calling corporate to give them a piece of my mind about having such conflicting and varied responses from their different stores – I hold corporate responsible for this and will not let them know what store I was at as it really doesnt matter since it is widespread. 1877-363-4537 is the number I was given to reach corp…. the more that call the merrier

            • Pam says:

thanks for the update Don. Was thinking about going today, so now I know not to even ask about the detergent. I am still waiting for them to get stock in of the Smart balance milk.
So, they only want multiple transactions in the SELF checkout? lol, I had employees there telling me how many paper towels they got!!

            • DON OCONNELL says:

I just had a 1/2 conversation with Denise from corporate and she can not understand why all of this is going on with the varied reason for not accepting this and further agrees that according to their policy this should be taken. She is going to talk to further ups to get a response and to get the stores on the same page that this should be accepted, she took my info and will call me back…. also I asked her to get info regarding stacking Manu/Target or other store coupons and she will be getting back to me on that tomorrow as well, her shift is ending and I told her no problem and that I can wait…. BTW – PAM, there was a lot of Smart Balance there today – it was all with expiration this month which is strange since I normally find this with expiration’s over 6-8 weeks…. I do freeze this milk and it freezes very very well….hth

            • Pam says:

thanks Don—let us know what they say! It would be great if you knew when you went in with a competitor coupon that it wouldn’t be a game of chance to find out if it will go over or not.
Also, thanks for letting me know about the SB milk. Yes, that is weird that the expiration date is so close. I figured once they got it in, that it would have a far expiration date as usual.

            • Kelley says:

Thanks for all the help Don! Excited to hear what corporate ends up saying. Let us know and I will be more than happy to call as well in support.

            • DON OCONNELL says:

Oh no problem Kelley, I didnt hear from Denise today, go figure. I am not surprised but I will be on the phone with her tomorrow, this way she can not give me the “I was just going to call you back: line. I will follow up either way tomorrow, truly hoping to push for some clarification and closure

            • sue says:

Waiting on pins and needles to hear what they tell you Don!

            • DON OCONNELL says:

On the phone with them right now and pressing hard, they are trying to shove me off to the store and i am determined for corp to answer…. i am being told the store determines the trading area….. being transferred again….. to be cont’d

            • DON OCONNELL says:

I in fact had my call escalated, this time to Faith, and it boils down to the store director….. the store director determines the competitor area in regards to accepting the competitor coupons and as Laura indicated on this thread, stores are being told not to accept this coupon as it is a “specialty store” I shared this info on this phone call and the most important thing that came out of this conversation is that the policy needs to be more specific and there needs to be more transparency and documentation in regards to what is considered competitors…. this will continue to be a work in progress but I was left with a good feeling that they in fact want to work with all of us consumers…. I hope this helps all of us….. I wish I had better answers but there just did not seem to be any at this time….

    • Pam says:

I have intermittent luck using competitor coupons at the Plainfield Meijer. I think it all depends on your cashier. Sometimes they’ll take them, sometimes they claim that you have to choose between a competitor coupon and a manufacturer, but can’t use both. Nobody there seems to know what to do anymore. This one, I am sure will cause any cashier alarm, though.

      • Anne says:

I don’t normally run into that problem at Plainfield, but had it happen at Oswego and was tired of being treated like a criminal so I contacted corporate. I was told by corporate AND the cashier supervisor at Oswego that they do accept ONE mfr and ONE competitor coupon per item. If you have trouble at Plainfield, I would recommend sending a complaint via the website.

    • LuluD318 says:

Went to Plainfield today to purchase 3 of them and was told I couldn’t use it because it didn’t state a specific product. I was kind to the manager and he was really nice also. I was told I was allowed to use it this “one time” because he couldn’t show me on the policy where it said that.

    • julie says:

just got back from oswego mwijer. manager said cant ise it on sale items, had to get the purex dual action . it was 9.99 he took the 8.00 off. also fyi.. all 11.99 and tide is 17.99. purex shelf is almost empty

      • julie says:

i paid 99 cents each for purex that were 9.99. each one 203 ounces i used 1.00 manufacturer coupon and 8.00 toys r us coupon on each. couldnt use on the purex on sale for 6.99 because toys r us coupon states Excludes Unbeatable Price items. at oswego meijer

  6. letsshop says:

Can’t we use it on Tide 128 oz or larger with a man. coupon too at Meijers ? Wonder if Target would except it !

  7. like2save says:

Meijer told me that they don’t accept Toys R Us store coupons because Toys R Us is not a direct competitor.

  8. jilldianne says:

I used it today at the Elgin Meijer when I bought some Tide for $11.97 & stacked it with a P&G coupon for $.40 off. It wasn’t questioned at all by the cashier, but who knows what will happen as time goes by. I may try it again tomorrow.

  9. KathyS says:

I used it today at Bloomingdale Meijer on Purex, the cashier rang in the coupon at $6.99, with no problem. However on another product, she told me if I use a compeditor store coupon, I can’t use a manufacture coupon too. (!) So I guess it really depends on who the cashier is….

    • Laura says:

That’s really funny that they said that you can’t stack. Because I called the Orland Park Meijer and the person on the phone said that you can stack a competitor coupon with a manufacturer coupon!

  10. Mel Lee says:

It says, “By MFR” on the bottom of the coupon. What does that mean?

  11. Laura says:

I just spoke w marissa who is in corporate head if marketing (i think). She said they wont take it since they do not consider babies r us direct competitors. I asked who are the competitors that they take from and they said any grocery store or similar retailer like target and walmart. She said she will be emailing me a statement to post tomorrow to post on my site so im curious to see what she says!

  12. laura says:

Heres the response from Meijer Corporate…….Marisa Thompson is vp of marketing and strategy…..

    Laura,

I wanted to close the loop on the Babies R Us coupon you brought to our attention. Late last night we communicated directly with our stores in regards to clarifying our coupon policy….stated here below for reference. The policy can be found online, and is where we direct customers in order to ensure that we are communicating consistently with all customers, across all stores. As we spoke on the phone, we are instructing our stores to not accept the Babies R Us coupon. This is consistent with the conversation you and I in which I stated that Meijer classifies Babies R Us as a specialty retailer and not a major competitor. So, first issue, we’ve clarified the immediate issue and concern with our stores, so that we are consistent.

However, as you pointed out, there remains ambiguity in how we define “major competitors” and in how customers interpret “major competitors.” This is an issue, we are continuing to work on in the few weeks and will look to publish an updated Coupon Policy immediately thereafter. Please rest assured, that we will take full consideration of the questions you raised including potentially naming those competitors.

Again, thank you for your feedback.

    Sincerely,

    Marisa Thompson

  13. Laura says:

Don….. I think marisa may be the best i posted her phone number above :)

  14. Laura says:

I am in plainfield and the store was great about honoring the coupon on sunday as i bought 4…. Then one of my readers on my blog went in mon and said the store manager was notified not to accept the coupon. Thats when i called because i was emailed from my readers. I finally got marisa who said she would prepare this stmt to put on my blog click4coupon.com. I also told her that they should make more clear who they consider competitors! Hth
