Finding expired inserts

A couple of you have asked recently how to find expired inserts so you know when it’s safe to toss them. Here are two places:

  1. Over on Coupons, Deals, and More, she removes coupons from her insert lists as they expire. So when they’re all removed, the insert is done. You can also this way see when there are only one or two left in an insert, in case you want to just clip that one coupon and toss the rest. Here’s her list of 2012 insert coupons, and her list of 2013 insert coupons.
  2. Coupon Tom keeps a list of current inserts here. Once an insert disappears off the left-hand sidebar there, it should be safe to toss.

Note with both of these methods there are sometimes some regional differences, or local restaurant coupons, etc., which are not necessarily listed in the databases. But most of the time you can be pretty safe following their guides.

I use Coupon Tom to weed through mine. I look at his list of coupons for every insert and decide if they are products that I would *ever* buy, and can toss more than just the expireds. Plus, I can remove the tossed ones from the list (and the All You’s since I don’t get the magazine). My 2nd favorite coupony site – next to yours, of course!

Sometimes it’s good to keep old inserts with one or two extant coupons on products you will never use – because frequently those are the ones that become money-makers paired with sales and/or cats or ecbs.

I have a file cabinet and I keep them all for a year. When the 1/20 comes this weekend I will pitch the 1/22 from last year without a second thought. If you have the room to do this, you do not need to spend any time culling your inserts.
