Dominick’s, no toothpaste overage for me

Published by rachel at 5:07 pm under dominicks, shopping trips

Dominick's 3/19/10 -- $7.88 OOP, net cost $13.88 after spending/earning Catalinas$7.88 OOP — $8.88 net cost after Cats and Rebate

So I went to Dominick’s today, because I’m a glutton for punishment. No overage on the Colgate for me — every coupon beeped, and customer service carefully counted up products and coupons to give me the toothpaste for free, but no more. The Soft Scrub Total coupons from the paper beeped. The Coke coupons from RecycleBank beeped. The Coke store coupons from the Healthy Heart Booklet rang up as $.01 -$.01 (go figure) so she had to take them off manually. One line open, 6 people piling up behind me, cashier wouldn’t take anything that beeped and made me go to CS. CS told me the next time have her call him so he could resolve it at the register “because these receipts are so confusing” and was not pleased about all the e-coupons that came off. All in all, a typical Dominick’s Day.

What I got after all that…

4 Kashi Heart-to-Heart cereal, $2.00 each wyb 4, $8.00. Used my FREE coupon + the three $1.50/1 coupons from Vocalpoint. The FREE one scanned at $3.99, so that’s $.49 in overage there (shhh).
8 12-packs of Diet Coke, $18.92. Hmm. It should have been $19.92? so I’m not sure what happened there. Anyway: Used three $1.00/1 from RecycleBank, an expired buy 4 get one free from some long ago Valli ad (she took off $2.49), two expired $2.00/2 from a tearpad last summer, and four $1.00/2 store coupons from the Heart booklet.
2 Pillsbury Easter cookies, $3.00. Used expired $1.50/2 from a blinkie machine this fall. Got off $4.25 in e-coupons from Shortcuts and Cellfire.
3 Soft Scrub Total, $8.97. Used expired BOGO printable from the last time they had those up (scanned at $3.99). Used two $1.50/1.
4 Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner, $7.96. Used two $2.00/2 peelies from cans.
10 various Colgate, $10.00. Not really sure what combination of coupons he finally took, but some of the Colgate Total from the Sunday Jewel ad and some of the store Healthy Heart booklet worth $10.00 altogether. The kid’s toothpaste, Total Whitening gel, and Total whitening paste were all $1.00 each wyb 3 or more.
Febreze air effects, $1.99. Got $1.00 off from PG eSaver and used $1.00/1 from the 3/7 PG.
Clementine cuties, $6.99. Used $1.00/1 from the 3/14 SS.

Paid with a $10.00 Catalina from Jewel and $7.88 in cash. Got back a $4.00 Catalina from Scrubbing Bubbles. Will send in for the $5.00 SC Johnson rebate. (The form is no longer online, but I printed extras and it’s good through 7/10.) So, my out of pocket cost was $7.88, but my net cost after Catalina madness and rebate was $8.88. Well, plus the cost of a stamp.

(All the Colgate Total from today and some of the cereal I’m piling up here is going to the food pantry — I really was only buying the Colgate for potential overage, since it’s free all the time, but no big deal.)

SCO at Westmont wanted a price prompt and there was no one to supervise so I just left my cereal there. No time to wait for them, because they are so slow and so fussy, and I didn’t feel like arguing. I guess I will just go to a regular register and hope it scans at $3.99 and they don’t notice. will have to buy something to eat overage. I was buying a donut at SCO but guess someone knew I didn’t need it ;)

Who was your cashier today at Dominick’s? There is one I try to avoid if possible.
Isn’t the price for Soft Scrub Total better at Wags? Anyway, $0.99 each is still a good price.

i thought it was bad if a free coupon rang up for higher than what we pay because then it looks like the store is trying to scam the company?

I bet we got the same cashier today. We bought basically the same items, I was happy with my Kashi deal. I used 2 free coupons on the Heart to Heart cereal and 2-$1.50 expired Honey Sunshine coupons. The cashier took $3.99 off for one of the frees and $3.00 for the other free cereal so I got $1.99 in overage on the cereal. I had my 2 year old with me so I didn’t even look at my receipt until hours later while he was napping.

They put the SC Johnson rebate form back up, but in a different spot…sneaky. http://www.totallytarget.com/2010/03/18/sc-johnson-mir-link-real-simple-q/

kristine — this coupon just automatically scanned at $3.99 without prompting for price and she didn’t write in a price — on occasion the free or bogo coupons will scan in at the “up to” price. The cereal only cost $3.00 before instant discount ($4.00 off wyb 4) and $2.00 after.

Don’t remember the cashier. It wasn’t the guy I avoid, she was very nice, but they’re all very worried about taking coupons if they beep now.

Shirley — What I was figuring would happen with the soft scrub total is that the BOGO would take off $2.99 and then I’d get $1.50 each off the $2.99 price of the other two, making it about $3.00/3 — not quite as good a deal, but saving me another trip to Wags. It actually scanned at $3.99 — I was distracted by my 7yo when she was doing that set so don’t honestly remember if it asked for a price prompt — so I got 3 for about $2.00, or slightly better than at Wags.

I just have to say, I CAN’T STAND DOMINICK’S. I mean, the last 4 times I went there, something either wasn’t stocked, or the doors were locked on the side of the parking lot where I parked, or the cashier was crochity and I had to just walk out. I mean, EVERYTIME, and the last time I went was about 2 months ago. Item was out of stock, go fig. But before that, well over a year. And everytime I go, I leave saying “that’s why I never come here”. I mean, Rachel, you really got ‘em for all that stuff you got, but I just throw my Dominick’s ad in the garbage immediately…not even a glance at it. HATE IT. Sorry, I’m in the mood to rant.

Your posts are so funny about Dominicks.. they make me smile. I have given up going to Dominicks. EVERY single time I go I have problems with my coupons. I always call corporate, they call the store and then I go back and get my things but with a hassle. I tried one final time with Jones sausage coupons and once again was told “no, we won’t take them”. Plain regular manufacturer coupons (but had a Jewel logo in lower left corner). Corporate called them and they said come back, you can use them… I said forget it. I’m done. Not going in there ever again, even if they are giving away FREE food! sorry, done ranting too :)

When I bought 4 Colgate, the 4th one scanned at $2. Check your receipt.

  12. rachelon 19 Mar 2010 at 9:56 pm

Mary Ann — all mine were $1.00 and I bought 10 — are you sure your 4th one wasn’t a different kind?

    I can’t help going back… maybe it’s the mood lighting :) .

  13. Meganon 19 Mar 2010 at 10:08 pm

Was there a sign on Colgate at the GE store? I was just there yesterday and it said $1.99 wyb 3, just under one type. I think I’m losing my touch at Dominicks this week. :)

  14. rachelon 19 Mar 2010 at 10:11 pm

Megan — No, they were just marked $2.00. I just bought the kind people reported to work and figured if my order was $10 more than expected I’d have them void them out.

  15. Julieon 19 Mar 2010 at 10:24 pm

What Qs are good on the kids colgate? Do you need to buy ten (or what is the minimum, if there is one, to get the lowest price?)

    Thanks!!

  16. Meganon 19 Mar 2010 at 10:25 pm

Ok – thought I was losing my mind or something. :) I picked up 9 tubes yesterday so will skip that deal this time around. :)

  17. Corissaon 20 Mar 2010 at 9:39 am

Julie, I had a bunch of 75 cent expired qs that I used on the Colgate kids and Colgate Total. All the $1 qs I had were only for “Colgate Total Advanced” varieties. The 6 oz Colgate Total Advanced was more expensive ($2 or 1.99) than the kids varieties or the plain “Colgate Total” (not Advanced). The Doms q says it is good on any Colgate Total, so it should work on the cheaper ones that are not Advanced. I bought 2 Colgate kids and one Colgate Total, used 3 75 cent expired qs and the $1 Doms q for Colgate Total, for 25 cents overage. Coupons were from inserts 2/21, 1/03 SS, and others further back.

    Rachel
Help me figure out the free Colgate. I was over at CW and I’m not finding the thread in the Dom’s forum. My husband won’t use Colgate but everyone else will and I have tons of 7c qs for them.

  19. rachelon 20 Mar 2010 at 10:35 am

Marie — some varieties of colgate (kids as well as 6oz total whitening gel and paste (NOT advanced)) are on sale for $1.00 each wyb 3 or more. So you can use any of the $1.00/1 total to get them for free (from the Sunday Jewel ad, expireds, from 3/7 SS). There is also $1.00/1 Total store coupon in the healthy heart booklet. If your dominick’s lets you use that with the mfr coupon, you’ll get $1.00 overage. Mine did not. Or, if you don’t have the mfr coupon you can still use the store coupon to get Total for free. There are also $.75/1 expireds out for the Colgate Kids, so you can get those for $.25 each. (2/21 SS for instance has some)

  20. Mary Annon 20 Mar 2010 at 11:34 am

The 4 Colgate I bought were identical. Receipt says l@2.00/3@l.00 so I did a return and re-buy. After I picked up more coupons, I bought in multiples of 3.

  21. rachelon 20 Mar 2010 at 11:37 am

Mary Ann — that’s so weird. I bought 10 (not a multiple of three!) and they all rang up $1.00. But I had 6 total and four kids, maybe it’s only the total that needs to be multiples of three?

  22. ErinILon 20 Mar 2010 at 12:15 pm

Went to Dominick’s this morning, they let me use both Colgate Total coupons (store and manu.) for a total of $3.00 overage (I only bought 3 tubes). The cashier did question it but I stood my ground that one was a manu. and one was a store coupon. Also got the Easter cookies with $4.25 off in ecoupons plus used a $1.00 manu. coupon so I made $2.25 on that! I did want to mention that Chex Mix is on sale for $2.00 got $1.50 deducted from ecoupons and used a 50 cent manu. coupon for a free bag of Chex Mix! One more thing I got was a box of Betty Crocker muffin mix on sale for $2.00 less $1.00 total in ecoupons and 40 cent manu. for a cost of 60 cents for the box.

  23. freddiemarieon 20 Mar 2010 at 2:03 pm

this is probably a silly question but does the soft scrub bogo coupons say any cleanser on them or specifically total?

  24. Christineon 20 Mar 2010 at 2:39 pm

I just don’t go anymore…can’t take the stress…I’d rather starve. Ha!

  25. Lynnon 20 Mar 2010 at 8:21 pm

I think I’ve figured out the weird store q issue with the Diet Coke. When I used mine tonight (2 of them, as I was buying 4-12 packs), they rang as that weird .01/-.01, but when I questioned it, she subtotalled and the display screen showed $1 off Coke (that is, one of the 2 q’s). The second didn’t work, so she put it in manually. When my final receipt printed, the top line is $0 and says “Soft Drink Copient”. The next line is the first 12-pack priced at 1.49 – net of the store q. The rest are recorded at 2.49 and the manual $1 she punched in came off at the bottom with the rest of the q’s. This is probably why your Diet Cokes totalled $18.92 instead of $19.92.

Interestingly, my Colgate store q’s – from the very same book as the Coke store q’s – all displayed on the screen as “$1 off Colgate” and appear as such at the bottom of the printed receipt.

Do you think they could possibly make it any more confusing? Oh well, cheap soda and overage on toothpaste is still worth it to me! Also got $2 overage on Fiber One as I had amassed $4 in e-coupons and used a paper fifty-center. Overall, it was a decent trip and they are very nice at my Dominicks.

  26. rachelon 21 Mar 2010 at 9:18 pm

Mary Ann — I bought 4 today and the 4th rang up full price, so don’t know why 10 worked. Dominick’s!

    freddiemarie — they say any.

Lynn — that’s it! she scanned it and it came up on screen -01 +01 so she manually punched in -$4.00 for the four — it must have actually come off. Weird, weird, weird.

  27. Sarahon 26 Mar 2010 at 6:51 pm

when to dominicks to pick up a few things today… colgate was listed as buy 3 or more for $1.99 each. Does the buy 3, get $3 off come off AFTER the 1.99 discount to make them $1 each….. or….. is the $1.99 sale already reflect the $3 off?

  28. rachelon 26 Mar 2010 at 6:57 pm

Sarah — some varieties of colgate (kids as well as 6oz total whitening gel and paste (NOT advanced)) are on sale for $1.00 each wyb 3 or more. The advanced and other varieties are $2.99 and drop to $1.99 wyb 3 or more.
