Your ideas on getting cheap newspapers — bumped up with more
Update: Just moved and updated from yesterday to add some more of folks’ ideas from comments. Note that if you’re in Chicagoland, you can buy the Sunday Chicago Tribune in Menards or The Dollar Tree for $1.00 as early as mid-morning on Saturday.
Sorry about the number of posts today — we all just hung around the house all day, and I’m sitting with the kids and the laptop in front of a scintillating episode of Caillou right now. So it seems like a good catchup, catchall day.
Anyway, a couple of you had ideas on getting cheap newspapers that I thought I’d share:
- JulieB comments: “Menards just sent me an email saying they’re having a 15% off everything you can fit in their reusable bag sale. So if you’re going to get at least 7 papers, the discount would pay for the cost of the bag (98cents) and any additional papers that you can fit in the bag would be 15% off free and clear! The bag looks pretty big, so I’m sure you could fit a lot of papers in there! http://menards.inserts2online.com/customer_Frame.jsp?drpStoreID=1&event=Menards%20Bag%20Sale&pageNumber=1&emailid=2A Sale starts today and goes through next Sunday, so you can do it again next Saturday!” Brilliant! Wish Menards was closer, hmm.
- Mike emailed that Metcalfe’s in Madison, WI will give you a free Sunday edition of the Wisconsin if you spend $5.00. Good idea if you’re going out to breakfast anyway.
Also note that people tend to read Sunday papers and abandon them on tables at places like Starbucks… - Kayla emailed that she goes dumpster diving at her apartment complex — an idea, if you’re adventurous.
- Heather says: “I’ve seen a box at the library marked “coupon exchange” which looks like they put all the flyers and other inserts from the newspaper in. Not sure when this is done on Sunday, but the couple times I’ve seen it on a Monday it’s been pretty picked thru.” I know they do this at the Fountaindale Library, and you might suggest it at yours if they don’t.
- Renee says: “When I gave my paper delivery person their Christmas card, I wrote in it that if they ever had extra coupon inserts they were just going to throw away, that I would gladly take them. Last Monday, there was a bag with 10 extra P&G inserts with my paper!! One of the moms at my daughters preschool gave me the idea. Hopefully, he has extra this week too!” Smart!
- Angela suggests: “Did you know???? I recently discovered that I could get free home delivery of the RedEye Weekend Edition. The link is available on the Chicago Tribune – Home Delivery website or you can access it directly at http://www.redeyeweekend.com. I live in the city of Chicago. I would expect the delivery range to be limited, but I don’t know.” RedEye usually contains coupon inserts, but not as many coupons or inserts as are in the Trib. Corissa points out that if you get the Sunday paper already, that your Redeye isn’t supposed to contain coupons — but some people’s do. I forgot about this because I’ve tried signing up for this more than once in Lombard, and it goes through, but the paper has never shown up — however, given my personal paper delivery problems, that could be just me! Worth a try.
- Jen L. says: “Chicago Tribune Customer Service: 800-874-2863 Promotional Code: 09TJ If you live in Chicago or in the surrounding suburbs, the Chicago Tribune has a promotional code for $0.50 Sunday-only home delivery.”
Thanks, guys!

I buy mine at the Dollar Tree. Not free but cheaper than anywhere else around here!
I’ve seen a box at the library marked “coupon exchange” which looks like they put all the flyers and other inserts from the newspaper in. Not sure when this is done on Sunday, but the couple times I’ve seen it on a Monday it’s been pretty picked thru.
Is the Sunday Tribune available at Menards on Saturday – is it always $1…?
Cindy, Yes, the Sunday Trib is available at Menard’s on Saturday for $1.00!
Thanks Tina!

What time does Menard’s start selling Sunday’s paper?
Did you know???? I recently discovered that I could get free home delivery of the RedEye Weekend Edition. The link is available on the Chicago Tribune – Home Delivery website or you can access it directly at http://www.redeyeweekend.com. I live in the city of Chicago. I would expect the delivery range to be limited, but I don’t know.
The RedEye Weekend is delivered on Saturday mornings and it contains coupon inserts similar to those in the Sunday Tribune. I haven’t done a side-by-side coupon comparison, but my estimate is that the RedEye Weekend sometimes contains fewer coupons or lower money-saving amounts than the Tribune. But either way I think the RedEye Weekend is an excellent way to get more free coupons.
For example, today there are 2 separate Red Plum inserts and 2 separate Smart Source inserts.
I just learned about this and I wanted to share. Thank you!
just signed up for downers grove, il and it worked…. so it appears its not just city delivery and still FREE… thanks for the info Angela!
Worked in Batavia, too … thanks. (BTW, it doesn’t mention anything about an introductory free offer … is it free, free … or just for a few weeks?)
I signed up for this a couple of times in the past (Lombard) and it’s never shown up, but then again, I have had paper delivery problems in the past. Great ideas, guys! I’ll make an addendum post for those who don’t read comments.
The deal with the RedEye is that if you have the Sunday paper delivered you are not supposed to get the coupons in the RedEye paper. I have heard of a few people who do, but the official word is that coupons in the RedEye are only if you don’t have a Sunday subscription. I get both (RedEye & Sunday), but no coupons in the RedEye.
I LOVE the suggestion about getting extras from your carrier — now that’s a real incentive to tip the carrier. Funny story: Since I blog for the Tribune’s Chicago Now site, they had me on (their) WGN radio recently. We entered through the Trib Tower lobby, and I grabbed a Sunday paper from a display, thinking, “Great! Free coupons!” Then I was told that they CHARGE for the papers in the lobby display. I was embarrassed but one of my editors there ran up to the newsroom to get me a free copy.
Might not seem surprising that they charge, since anyone can walk into the lobby, but at my old place of employment, the SF Chronicle, visitors to the lobby could help themselves to a free paper.
Thanks for the Menard’s tip — I’m about to head there anyway.
I always have a paper called “Hoy Fin de Semana” thrown in my yard every weekend. I think it might be the Spanish version of the Red Eye? Anyway, there’s usually coupon inserts in there – not as many as in the Trib, but still coupons! And the paper is free.
I’m in Indiana and get the Tribune… however the RedEye isn’t available here
Wonder if I signed up to pay for it… then it might be available!! haha
Nice deal at Menards, I just bought 6 papers for $5.10. I get some delivered too and get inserts from others so I thought 6 was a good number.
I just went to Menards, too. Great deal! Also, many toys and Christmas decorations are 50% and then 15% off in the bag. Also, I had a $1 off Duck tape coupon (11/22 SS). There is a 10 yard roll for $1, minus 15%, so it was more than free.
I got 10 papers in my Menard’s bag….exactly the number I wanted! Thanks everyone!
I used my overage at CVS this morning and got my 5 Tribune’s for free and I still came out with more ECB’s than I went in with!
Oh yeah! dh has picked up Hoy a couple times downtown in the free paper receptacles on the street, so check those if you’re down there too.
FYI … $4 Tag Book or Leapster Game Q on page 9 of Parade.
Fifteen Tribs fit into that green bag but I thought I’d have a hernia lifting it out of the cart into my vehicle. $12.60 for 15 papers and a bag. Thanks for the heads-up.
I fit 12 papers in a Menards bag and ended up paying 11.09 for the papers and the bag!

Nata-Leigh THANK YOU!!! I am so happy about the $4 coupons for the Tag and I never look in Parade. I went to Walmart yesterday with the $4 printables and found a few books on clearance… well they wouldn’t let me use the printables! They said because the coupon had a mailing address from Texas they would not take it. Very strange. DH called the store manager when we got home and the store manager said they would not take ANY printables that had a Texas address because of the high amount of fraudulent coupons that have Texas listed. Very strange…
OK guys! WOW! I have gone to Menards and a couple Dollar Trees and they are out of Tribs. Anyone know where I can get a decent deal at this point?
Don’t panic — they’ll stock the regular edition again tomorrow (it’s the early edition they have on Sat.). I’d suggest going in the AM though because EVERYONE is buying multiple papers this week.
Thanx Rach, can I call you Rach?
I feel like we know each other, I am on your blog so often! Thanks for all you help.
Kum & Go stations (at least in central/southern iowa) offer the Des Moines Register for free w/fuel fill-up. Whenever we take a trip from Ames to Kansas City, we fill up at the border and again in Ames to get 2 free Sunday papers!
