Greener Christmas giveaway (12/14) — CLOSED

It’s giveaway day here on Mashup Mom! Up next: A Greener Christmas, edited by Sheherazade Goldsmith. This is a lovely book about hand-crafting gifts and cards, creating natural decorations, and making traditional recipes. There’s everything in here, from making flavored oils to spiced nuts to a dried leaf wreath.

Why am I giving this away? This was my grab bag gift at my book club party… and, we don’t celebrate Christmas, so I have no need for it. It’s so pretty, though, that I thought that one of you would really love it!

We give gifts of pajamas on Christmas Eve so everyone wakes up Christmas morning in new pj’s.

  2. Heatheron 08 Dec 2009 at 10:42 am

We used to do the pj thing too! My favorite, though, is the Christmas sugar cookies. My mom makes the best, and we always have fun decorating them!

I love decorating the tree every year. The ornaments tell a story of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Thanks!

My favorite tradition is my mom and dad’s amazing Christmas Eve dinner. Italian cooking at it’s finest…I cannot duplicate their meatballs for the life of me! I look forward to them every year!

My favorite Christmas tradition is going to church at 11pm on Christmas Eve. We end with the lights turned low, singing “Silent Night” and passing a candle flame to one another until every candle in the church is lit. It’s a beautiful moment that stays with me.

We have a 19 month old and we’ve started the tradition of opening the advent calendar that we keep on the mantle everyday with her. She looks forward to it all day long! Now that we have another one on the way (day after Christmas), we’ll have to figure out how to share that with him too!

My favorite Christmas tradition is decorating gingerbread houses. We started this tradition when we moved to our new home 4 years ago. My 2 daughters were missing their old friends terribly, so I got some gingerbread houses and invited their friends to a get together.
Everybody had so much fun! We’ve had a gingerbread house decorating party yearly since then, and every year it gets bigger and the guestlist keeps getting longer…We’ve also ask that friends bring toys or pantry goods for donations to make it more meaningful.

My favorite is our annual family photo…we have about 30 people and growing!!

  11. Nicoleon 08 Dec 2009 at 12:45 pm

Hmm, my favorite…I have so many! We buy an ornament every year for each of our kids that describes them for the year (Elmo for my daughter’s 2nd Christmas for example) and then I take a picture of the ornament and explain why we picked that particular ornament for the year. We also go to Come to Bethlehem every year at the Salvation Army in Norridge and LOVE it! And of course, going to chop down our own Christmas tree. I told you it was hard for me to pick just one!

We do where you open one present on Christmas Eve and it’s usually a game of some sort so that everyone can play it and not want more presents earlier!

My favorite is making gingerbread houses with my kids. Neighborhood kids are not joining in the fun each year. My house is quite filthy by the time everyone leaves completely overloaded on SUGAR. They take the house with them, and are so very proud of their work. The smiles make it worth the effort!

I like to remember a favorite childhood traditon of hopping in the car on the evening of the 24th to look at all the holiday lights. When we got back to the house, Santa had magically dropped off all the gifts under our tree! My parents explained this early delivery as something Santa had to do to get all the gifts delivered in time around the world!

My favorite Christmas tradition is bundling my kids up the week before Christmas; putting them in the car and driving around to see the neighborhood lights. My husband and I loved doing this before we had kids and are looking forward to doing this as the kids grow…

Every year on Christmas Eve, my mom and dad come over. After dinner, we all sit in the family room and my mom reads from the Bible the store of Jesus’ birth. What an amazing and wonderful event. And that is truely what CHRISTmas is all about.

My favorite holiday tradition would be having the kids put up the ornaments on the tree. It’s great to see their expressions and hear their comments about some of the ornaments they made, etc…. I also like going sledding with them every winter.

My favorite tradition actually takes place the day after thanksgiving. It’s one of the only times both my brother and I are at our parents’ house, so we all go to the cut-your-own-xmas tree farm and make a day of it. We tailgate with a picnic and wine, then spend hours deliberating over the perfect tree. I get the honor of cutting it down (because we’ve learned I’m the only one who can saw straight!).
