Walgreens 10/16/09 + ODDS and ENDS

Published by rachel at 10:23 am under opinion, shopping trips, walgreens

I thought I’d tell you this morning about my little Walgreens trip today + answer some odds and ends from comments that don’t really warrant their own full posts. So first, the shopping! :)

Walgreens 10/16/09 -- $1.70 oop

$1.70 OOP

Transaction one

3 character band-aids, $5.97 with in-ad coupon. Used three $.50/1 from the 8/2 RP and $2.00/each from the Walgreens children’s activity booklet.
Vaseline sheer infusions lotion, $6.99. Used $1.50/1 printable (no longer avail.).
2 Trident layers gum, $2.00. Used two $.75/1 printables.
2 Crest toothpaste, $2.00. Used two $.75/1 from the 9/27 PG. (I like plain Crest paste, even with all this free iso-active extra whitening whatnot available. Go figure!)
1 Halloween tumbler, $.17 with in-ad coupon.

Paid with $5.00 RR (from Nyquil) + $.97 in cash. Got back $8.00 RR ($7.00 for Vaseline; $1.00 for gum). Up $2.03 this transaction.

Transaction two

1 pack M&Ms, $.49 with in-ad coupon.
1 Emergen-C shots, $3.49.
2 Nyquil, $10.00. Used two $1.00/1 from the 9/27 PG.
3 character band-aids, $5.97 with in-ad coupon. Used three $.50/1 from the 8/2 RP and $2.00/each from the Walgreens children’s activity booklet.

Paid with $10.00 RR (from Vaseline and Chapstick) and $.73 in cash. Got back $8.50 RR ($5.00 for Nyquil; $3.50 for Emergen-C). Down $2.23 this transaction. So my net cost today at Wags: $.20.

Random thing the first: What do you DO with all this crap? :)

What did I really want at Wags today? Nyquil. All the Barbie band-aids and the lotion are going to the food pantry; dh will like the Emergen-C; the plain Crest I’ll use, but wasn’t in dire need of; Mr. now-7 will want the gum, though we didn’t really “need” it. (Can you imagine Mr. 7′s reaction if I gave him a Barbie band-aid?!) But if buying the other stuff gets me free Nyquil and allows me to donate to others who can use it at the same time, why not?

Random thing the second: Isn’t Hormel chili gross?

It does look kind of gross, actually. I’ve never tried it before, since I always make my own, but I’m planning on having it for lunch later and will report back ;) . Marie posted a great looking chili dip recipe in comments here. Again, for $.50/jar, I’ll try it. If it’s gross, I’ll give away the other jar or make chili dip with it.

Random thing the third: Did you forget about the Capri Sun coupons?

Yes I did! Megan points out that there were Capri Sun $.55 manufacturer coupons in the Jewel ad a couple of weeks ago. If you kept these, use them at Dominick’s this week, where Capri Sun is $1.49 each when you buy 5. (I also have a $.50 coupon clipped but no idea where it came from, looks like a brochure? Anyone know?) Stephanie comments that the 100% juice pouches are also $1.49 wyb 5. I forget who was asking about juice boxes a while back, but this is a great time to stock up, esp. if you have the coupons.

Random thing the fourth: How’d you get the GM Catalina?

First, remember you can refer back here to find many of the participating products. But here’s the math on this shopping trip:

(pre-preferred price/preferred price)

2 Fiber One yogurt, $6.50/$5.00.
3 Pillsbury Crescent rolls, $9.50/$5.00.
3 Simply Cookies, $11.85/$7.50.

So my pre-preferred prices added up to $27.85 — well over the $25.00 I needed to trigger the $10.00 GM Catalina. I got the second $4.00 Catalina for buying 6 Pillsbury refrigerated dough products. I went and scanned my yogurt and cookies at the in-store price scanner to make sure I was hitting the right numbers; already knew the price of the crescent rolls because I bought them the other day at the same store.

And this is why you can do a lot better working off of “sale” prices. My actual cost with preferred card for these items was $17.50 ($9.80 after coupons), and it would have cost me much more out of pocket to hit $25.00 on preferred card pricing. However, as always, this is a do at your own risk game. If you are nervous about losing Catalinas or are very new at this, you might start by using preferred card pricing so that you have the ad to point to if things go wrong, or start with very simple scenarios rather than mix/matching products.

thanks Rachel, I figured the Fiber one was part of the deal…I’ll double check prices at my jewel and will duplicate if “price is right” as these are products we use. Thanks for all you do!

I am still miffed about the band-aids. I mean, ad q and coloring book q are both STORE q. So how can you use both? I could use some bandaids, and do use character ones myself, but it seems…icky.

Helen — Walgreens policy allows you to use two different store coupons on the same item as long as the store coupons (edit) come from different places. Why, I do not know, but if that is their policy then we might as well take advantage of it, no? I have done this at 3 different Wags now and no one has batted an eye.

The bandaid scenario worked for me yesterday perfectly. Thanks. I did the huggies earlier this week and it also spit out a $5 off any size enfamil MQ for me.

I heart wags has a couple sites to print out the Vaseline coupons if you’ve not printed them all out before….

My local Walgreens wouldn’t let me do the flyer coupon & coloring book coupon at the same time – the cashier saw the bandaids in my cart & immediately frowned & called for a manager, so I imagine it’s been a problem at their store :( Our other stores don’t have any bandaids left, so I assume it’s working there, but I haven’t been able to find any :(
