Wags and Jewel, 10/14/09
Today I made two quick trips to Walgreens and one to Jewel. It’s not as crazy as it sounds — I have 15 minutes to kill after dropping one kid off before dropping off another, so hit the Walgreens across from school. (I figure it’s more productive to do that then just sit in the parking lot with him for 15 minutes.) Then, hit the second Walgreens and Jewel (which are across the street from each other!) on the way home from yoga. A good day!
$7.29 OOP. Got $8.00 RR, $14.00 Catalinas
Walgreens
Transaction one
3 character bandaids, $5.97 with in-ad coupon. Used $2.00/1 from the children’s activity booklet, two $1.00/1 manufacturer coupons that came with my UPS packages, and one $.50/1 from 8/2 SS.
1 fresh effects Chapstick, $2.99.
1 sheer infusion vaseline lotion, $6.99. Used $1.50/1 printable (no longer available).
1 caramel, $.35 (filler).
Paid with $5.00 in RR from yesterday and $2.15 cash. Got back $10 RR ($7.00 for Vaseline and $3.00 for Chapstick). Up $2.85 this transaction.
Transaction two
2 20-ct Nyquil liquicaps, $10.00. Used two $1.00/1 from the 9/27 PG.
3 character Band-aids, $5.97. Used $2.00/1 from the children’s activity booklet and two $.50/1 from the 8/2 SS.
1 Walgreens peroxide, $.29.
Paid with $7.00 RR from transaction one + $.44 cash. Got back $5.00 RR (for Nyquil). Down $2.44 this transaction. This puts me up $.41 at Walgreens for the day. Really all I want this week is more Nyquil (we have colds here!), but will need to do more rolling for that.
Jewel
3 Emerald roasted peanuts, $6.00. Used three $1.00/1 printables.
4 Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta, $4.00. Used two $1.00/2 printables from Coupons.com.
3 Pillsbury garlic butter crescent rolls, $5.00. Used three $1.00/1 printables (no longer available).
3 Pillsbury original crescent rolls, $5.00. Used three $1.00/1 printables (no longer available).
2 Pillsbury cinnamon rolls w/ cream cheese frosting, $3.34. Used two $1.00/1 printables (no longer available).
Got $3.00 instant savings for hitting $10.00 on the Emerald + Ronzoni. Paid with $3.00 Catalina (from Clorox the other day) + $4.70 cash. Got back $14.00 in Catalinas ($10.00 for GM and $4.00 for Pillsbury). Up $6.30 this transaction!
GM scenario numero uno
So there’s one GM scenario for you — 8 of the Pillsbury refrigerated crescents and sweet rolls that are on sale 3/$5.00 get you $14.00 in Catalinas. (At my store they were ringing 3/$9.50 before preferred card.) So even with NO coupons, that’s a money maker, since 8 will run you $13.34 with $14 back. Use coupons to do even better. (See the original GM post for coupon locations.)
If you do a GM run yourself today, please post your scenarios for others — thanks!

So, I did the exact Clorox and chicken transaction that you talked about, but received no catalina’s for the transaction. Thoughts?
I got 7 Pillsbury Simply cookies for $9 after coupons (6 for $1.25 off and 1 for $1 … all IPs) and got back $10 and $4. (Well, I should’ve, but the machine started flashing red because it was out of paper, so they gave me $14 on my debit card.
)
I had some of the cookies today and don’t think they’re all that great. Nothing like homemade, at least. I guess for $2.50 for just 12 cookies ON SALE, I was expecting them to be better. lol
Bumsky — Several thoughts, but I wasn’t there, so… here are a few possibilities: You accidentally grabbed Jewel wipes instead of clorox (nearly identical canisters right next to them). You grabbed the purple kind, which isn’t working. They punched one of your coupons in as “grocery,” reducing your total. They rang up lower at your store — look at the pre-preferred price on your receipt, add it up, and you need to be over $10.00 after the $3.00 instant discount. Your Catalina machine was out of paper, lost its satellite connection, was blinking red, was jammed, you shopped between about 11pm-3am when it can be down… there are a lot of variables
.
Kristina — Good deal! I got them in the last GM deal and thought they were all right — not as good as homemade, but definitely better than the “chub” cookie dough.
Hi Rachel ,
I have 6 pillsbury coupons( $1) for the crescent rolls. and 2($1.25) for the simply cookie.
Can/will I still get the $14 Catalina for this.?
Thanks.
MEg
When does the Clorox Cat end? Thanks!
meg — I’m thinking so. As always check “sale” price at your store — but 6 crescent @ 3/$9.50 = $19.00 right there, so if the simply cookies ring at $3.00+ each before preferred card you should be fine.
Diane — the cat runs through 10/24, but they go off sale tomorrow, so I’d do it today!
Question: If I use my $14 catalinas to pay for more crescents will more print out?
Hi – one more question – on the Walgreens, I tried to purchase a RR item with RR from prior purchase – it would not work. The manager came over and told me I couldn’t do that. However, from your post, I can see that there must be a caveat that I am missing…????
You can get in and out of Walgreens in 15 minutes – I’m impressed!
Bumsky – Wags’ RRs do not roll – meaning you can not use a RR from Charmin (example) to buy another pack of Charmin. If you do, another one will not print. The tricky part is that you also cannot use a RR from the same parent company (in this example Charmin is made by Proctor & Gamble). So, if one week there is a Charmin deal & the next week there is an Iams deal (also made by P&G), you cannot use the Charmin RR to buy the Iams and expect another RR to print.
P.S. There is some sort of glitch going on with P&G products right now. They are reportedly rolling – the 2nd RR IS printing. This is not normal & you can try it at your own risk. These things have been reported in the past, but it was quickly remedied. Then people who read about it online were screwed because they tried it after it had been fixed. Me? I’m too chicken to try it. I’ll just collect the RRs and spend them at Jewel.
aargh…I’m wearing myself too thin around here…trying to take care of sick kids and sick me and still catch all these deals and work…not so great-today I accidentally got 7 crescent rolls/grands! used a bunch of my good coupons for it, too! what the heck…I can’t believe I did that.
grrrrrrr.
oh! and I got 4 Clorox and no Cat…time for me to go to bed!! : )
Oy! Well I see you posted this at 1230 am — if you JUST tried it, the Catalina machines cb down. (Don’t shop between 11pm-3am because that’s when they reboot-reset and it’s ifffy.)
Heidi: Yup!
It was 11:30 or so when I did it, but I did get the $4 pillsbury cat…so machines weren’t down at that particular point…just bad Cat luck… : )
I read on other threads that people are buying the wrong pillsbury rolls and they are not getting the $4 cat!! I wanted to do the pillsbury rolls but I was overwhemed by the different varieties that I didn’t bother buying any!! Mashup mom is there anyway you can post the upc for the garlic buttery crescents rolls, orig crescent rolls, and the cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing?
Thank You!! Have a good day!!
Anyone else having a hard time finding those coloring books at Walgreens? I’ve been in three different ones now and I haven’t found them, even at the pharmacy.
Julia — they’ve been out a long time and have been clearanced at some stores, so yours may not have them. I’ve seen them with the rest of the coloring books, by the pharmacy, and on an endcap.
cl — the varieties I bought should work. A couple people have reported problems with the regular cinnamon rolls but other people are getting the cats for them so if you are nervous, just stay away from regular cinnamon rolls.
pt — did you grab the jewel wipes by mistake? or the purple ones?
Julia-I looked on ebay last week and there were a few on there for not much more than you can buy them for at Wags.
I had a Jewel disaster (5516 N. Clark St, 60640, Andersonville). I didn’t get the Pillsbury $4 oyno coupon, nor did I get the GM $10 oyno coupon.
Does it matter when during the transaction you scan your Jewel card? I had my card scanned at the beginning, before any items where rung-up.
I bought 7 Pillsbury sweet rolls and 1 Pillsbury Simply cookie dough.
Sweet rolls $3.29 each on shelf, rang-up $3.17 – 1.50 b/c 3/$5 with card
Simply cookies 3.95 each on shelf, rang-up $3.95 – 1.45 b/c 2/$5 with card
I used $1 off Simply cookie MC and 2-$1 off/2 sweet rolls MC. And the checker failed to scan another coupon for $1 off/3.
Bottom line … I paid $11.19 for 8 pillsbury products (7 sweets rolls, 1 simply cookies).
Maybe I didn’t hit the $25 GM minimum, but I definitely should have gotten the $4 Pillsbury (or at least $2). I bought 8 Pillsbury items!
Was I somehow limited to the number of coupons that I could get on a single transaction? I also took advantage of the Ziploc offer and that worked. I got the coupon for $2 oyno.
I think it was bad luck. I chose not to complain to the store. I probably won’t rush back either.
Angela — No, it doesn’t matter when you scan your card. If you got neither cat, then it’s possible that the machine ran out of paper or jammed or something after the ziploc cat, or it lost its satellite transmission. You could have argued at least the $4.00 one because there are shelf tags and you obviously bought more than enough products. Sorry that happened!
Erin – thanks for the tip about Ebay. I never thought to look there!
