Stopped at ALDI on the way home from ALDI — does ALDI broth have MSG?

I know, right? We toured a store this morning in Geneva (lovely store, bigger than mine!) and it made me realize I needed to buy a couple of things. Sorry about the fuzzy photos — couldn’t find my phone so used the iPad, and not sure what it was doing, lol.

Also, someone had asked last week what the difference was between the Fit & Active and Chef’s Cupboard broths and whether they contained MSG.

Does ALDI chicken broth contain MSG?

I bought the regular last week, and bought Fit & Active today, so thought I’d compare — both were $.99 a box:

  • Each has 5 calories per cup and 0 grams of fat.
  • Each has 0% cholesterol, 0 carbs, 0 fiber, 1g protein.
  • Fit & Active has 570 mg sodium (24% DV) and Chef’s Cupboard has 860 mg sodium (38% DV).
  • Both boxes say gluten free.
  • Both say “no added msg*” … “*except for that naturally occurring in yeast extract.”
  • Ingredients in Fit & Active: chicken stock from concentrate, water, salt, yeast, organic evaporated cane juice, carrot powder, organic carmelized onion flavor.
  • Ingredients in Chef’s Cupboard: chicken stock (water, concentrated chicken stock). Contains less than 2% of salt, natural flavor, yeast extract, dextrose, celery juice concentrate, citric acid, sage extract, caramel color.

So, hope that helps! What they told us on the tour today was that the Fit & Active products were intended to be a better for you choice than the standard product — not necessarily healthy, but a better for you alternative.

What I bought

2 Pomegranates, $.98.
Bag Red Delicious apples, $2.49.
4 Fit & Active chicken broth, $3.96.
2 bags frozen salad shrimp, $3.96.

Paid $12.82. And yeah, I’m stocking up on the broth while it’s still $.99 — mine doesn’t expire til January 2014! More about the ALDI experience later 🙂

Yeast extract IS MSG. Also, “natural flavor CAN be MSG. The FDA has about 12 different names for MSG that they allow to be labeled differently although it is MSG. I found out the hard way.

OH my GOSH!!!! Their organic chicken broth is HORRIBLE! I don't ever write horrible reviews but what an absolute waste of time. My filtered water is better. I will absolutely stick to homemade or when in a pinch (or feeling lazy) I will stick to using Pacific brand.

It was something like $1.88 today in Geneva, but I think it just went up everywhere. It was like $2.19! at the Glen Ellyn store where I stopped on the way home.

I really like the Geneva Aldi store. I also get milk there because it is usually around #1.68 a gallon there.
