Yes, you definitely should get one. We’ve had one for years and it cooks our rice perfectly every time.
I have had a rice cooker since the mid 1980′s–I am on my 3rd -went through 2 Panasonics and now have a Breville (ebay refurbished). Everytime I go to Hmart
( think you have this store in your area-Korean supermarket), I get rice cooker
envy– these cook all the specialty rices(sticky, brown, black you name it)
but I cannot justify $150 plus. Cannot live without a rice cooker even though I do fine on the stovetop.
I learned this from a Thai cooking class that after you rinse either Basmati or
Jasmine rice—soak for about 30 minutes before cooking–grains fluff up even more.
It is a must have item in my family. We have a Tiger brand rice cooker from an Oriental store in Uptown Chicago and it is worth every penny. Other brands may be more expensive. We’ve used it every single day for almost ten years and it is still good. All you have to do is to rinse the rice, add water, close the lid, press the button and you have yourself a perfect pot of rice 30 minutes later, every time. It automatically switches over to keep warm after the rice is done. It keeps warm for as long as you want it. It never burns and never sticks so you won’t waste any rice at all. You get a measuring cup for the rice and inside the cooker there are water lines to tell you how much water you need to add. Your Mr. 4 could make you perfect rice for the whole family. And Rachel, once you get yourself a rice cooker, you need to get a wok for all the stir fry to go with the rice.
We just use a veggie steamer with a rice cooker insert, but it only makes 2 cups of rice (and takes 45 minutes).
